194514449np ca. 1945. Very good . Collection of 9 loose approximately 6" x 4" black and white photographs one duplicate. Ink stamp of Universal Photo Service of Lacrosse Wisconsin to rear of each. Print edges slightly curled few with corner creases. Overall very good.

Small photograph collection of a Crossing the Line ceremony aboard an unnamed WWII-era US naval ship. A long-established naval tradition dating back at least until the 19th century such "Sons of Neptune" proceedings initiate sailors "Pollywogs" after their first crossing of the equator by their more seasoned shipmates "Shellbacks". Though these ceremonial hazings could be brutal the one here portrayed seems rather tame with most participants seen smiling and initiates confined to activities like scrubbing the deck. One image does picture a "Neptune Crawl" however where Pollywogs crawl along the deck and are "paddled." unknown books

In April he was moved to the Hampton Court one of four ships which on 6 January 1745 fell in with two French ships of the line off Ushant. Two of the English ships the Captain and the Sunderland parted company. The Hampton Court and Dreadnought continued the chase; but although Mostyn's ship came up with the French it could not engage without the assistance of the Dreadnought and the two Frenchmen got safely into Brest."

Mostyn was brought up for court martial and acquitted but his conduct became an object of popular and official scorn -- this heavily critical pamphlet is usually attributed to Admiral Vernon. The other carriers of her class were the USS Saratoga USS Ranger and USS Independence. She superseded Shinano of World War II vintage as the largest aircraft carrier ever built by full load displacement and was the first to specifically support jet aircraft. The ship was affectionately called "The FID" because James Forrestal was the first ever Secretary of Defense FID standing for "First In Defense". This is also the slogan on the ship's insignia and patch. She was also informally known in the fleet as the "Zippo" and "Forrest Fire" or "Firestal" because of a number of highly publicized fires on board most notably a 1967 incident in which 134 sailors died and 161 were injured." Forrestal was commissioned 1 October 1955 and remained on the active Navy roles until her decommissioning in September 1993. This cruise book documents her "second tour of duty in the Mediterranean from 2 September 1958 to 12 March 1959 where Forrestal again combined a program of training patrol and participation in major exercises with ceremonial hospitality and public visiting. Her guest list during this cruise was headed by United States Secretary of Defense N. H. McElroy." Wiki. Scarce: OCLC records 5 institutional holdings. hardcover books

LD16849Very Good. Portrait of British captain Henry Whitby whose ship fired a shot which infamously killed an American seaman in 1806. Silhouette reverse portrait on glass 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches to sight captioned "Cpt. Henry Whitby R.N." in image; not examined outside of frame. Np early 19th century.

In the years leading up to the War of 1812 the British Navy made a practice of checking American merchant ships to ascertain whether embargoed French cargo was aboard. In April 1806 off New York the American merchant ship Richard refused to stop when commanded by Captain Henry Whitby's HMS Leander. A warning shot was fired in what proved to be American territorial waters. The shot was poorly aimed and splintered a railing; a shard killed an American sailor named John Pierce. This triggered an international incident with President Jefferson calling for Whitby's arrest. Whitby was cleared in a British court-martial which only increased tensions. We don't know when this portrait of Whitby was created but he was promoted to captain in 1801 and died in 1812. unknown books
