4272July 1863-March 1864. A set of six financial documents relating to two ships. The barque Texas and the barque Alamo were owned by Oliver H. Perry a shipping merchant from Southport Connecticut. The Texas was lost at sea in late 1862 while serving the Union cause during the American Civil War. Five of the six documents report Perry’s earnings on the ships. These are from Connecticut shipping company Wakeman Dimon & Co. who operated Perry’s ships. The sixth letter is from the Atlantic Insurance Company. It concerns Perry’s insurance policies on the ships. The documents are in very good condition overall with folds. unknown books

Housed in a light blue mailing envelope with annotations on the recto in holograph ink noting contact information for Fouquet and Guyot. <br/><br/>Based de La Fayette's 1678 anonymously published novel France's first historical novel widely regarded as an early psychological novel. The Princess Vlady marries a much older prince Marais but yearns for a handsome duke Poron. Her fidelity eventually coming into question. Marais also starred in Delannoy's and Cocteau's other collaboration "Love Eternal" 1943. <br/><br/>Two transparencies 3.25 x 4.5 inches one slightly larger. This book is hard-bound in a custom fine binding of full black leather with a gilt stamped heraldic/armorial insignia to the upper cover a gilt stamped anchor insignia on the lower cover gilt tooling to the cover edges and spine. There are silk doublures inside the covers. The covers show scuffing and soiling edge-wear and rubbing to the joints corners and spine-ends. The hinges are cracked with the text-block loosening and with some of the pages loosening or loose laid-in. The contents are bright and generally clean with illustrations of Battleships Submarines Etc. some actual/real photographs and some color illustrations pasted-down but also with some toning. A collection of thirteen real photo postcards featuring young African American Navy midshipmen serving or training during World War II twelve of which have been signed by the subjects in the margin below their photograph. Seven of the men have also added their address below their names while one serviceman inscribed his to "Mr. Strong." The sailors hail from a variety of locations namely Tennessee New Jersey Oklahoma Illinois Maryland and New York two from Brooklyn. The men are all posed likely against a studio backdrop and each is dressed in a blue uniform and white hat. <br> <br> The United States Navy was much slower to welcome African-American servicemen and integrate than the Army. In 1942 the Navy expanded service opportunities for African Americans beyond mess service and Camp Robert Smalls was created within Naval Station Great Lakes to host the first full albeit segregated training programs. The Navy began desegregating training in 1944 with the first thirteen African Americans becoming commissioned and warrant officers that same year the "Golden Thirteen". By 1945 all training was fully integrated. <br> <br> A useful group of photographs signed by African-American midshipmen of the Greatest Generation braving the American Navy during a transformative time in its history. unknown books

Approx: 12-1/2" x 10" <br/><br/>The writings on the first paste-down seen to being a very brief play by play of Robert Given's whereabouts. As the color of the ink seems to change with each "entry": "First leave from boat camp. Left San Diego Sat. 10:30 July 20 - 1946. Got home Monday July 22 1pm - Left July 29 - 1946 at 7:50p.m. - Got to San Diego Aug. 1. In HollywoodJuly 31. Left San Diego Friday Aug. 9 - 1946 at 11 a.m. Arrived in Portland Maine 10:00pm Aug 13. Left Portland Wed. Sept 4 Arrived - Brooklyn Navy Yard Sept. 5. First liberty in N.Y. sept. 5 - 4:30 till Sept. 9 -8am Came home Sept. 29 went back to N.Y. Oct. 5 1946 there Oct 7-19-46 -- Friday Nov. 23 - 1946 went to Staten Island from N.Y." Over all this seems to be a young boy's memories of being in the Navy and things he visited and saw. The letters only read through a few of them seem to be a son writing to his parents - along with a few letters to other family members. Discussing his day to day on the U.S.S. Alexander J.
