Tiré du Cabinet de Monsieur Peilhon Sécretaire du Roy. Paris, Chez Jean, 1840 circa. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, cm 54 x 75,5 (alla lastra) più margini. Un lieve uniforme ingiallimento e una fine rottura in corrispondenza della battuta della lastra al margine laterale sinistro, leggere ma ampie abrasioni dell'inciso.
Legatura in piena pelle, 5 nervi al dorso, tassello in pelle rosso al dorso con titoli impressi in oro. Importante opera composta dal poeta scozzese Falconer dopo la sua lunga carriera nella Marina Militare, l'autore morirà nel 1769 a seguito del naufragio della fregata Aurora, sulla quale si era imbarcato, nei pressi del Capo di Buona Speranza. Il volume al suo interno raccoglie 11 delle 12 splendide tavole incise ripiegate fuori testo che illustrano la costruzione di alcuni tipi di imbarcazioni (manca la tavola X). Le tavole presentano alcune riparazioni con nastro adesivo, la tavola I è staccata. I piatti risultano completamente staccati. Nonostante alcune sporadiche piccole fioriture il volume all'interno si presenta in buono stato.

Très intéressant travail qui s'inspire en particulier des statistiques de la toute récente confrontation russo-japonaise de Tsushima en 1905. L'auteur évoque également les combats de Yalu, Chemulpo et Santiago (à Cuba en 1898 : "A Santiago, les Espagnols perdirent 510 hommes sur 1900 : 350 tués ou noyés et 160 blessés. Les Américains eurent 1 tué et 1 blessé. Ils tiraient en toute sécurité comme à la cible, pariant bruyamment sur chaque coup, ce qui indigna le commandant d'un vaisseau qui rappela à ses officiers que leur cible étaient des hommes qui mouraient"...) L'édition est attribuée à J.-B.-A. Hédouin. L'adresse de Genève, "Jean-Léonard" (allusion à Jean-Léonard Pellet) est fictive. Selon Barbier: "Cet ouvrage fut supprimé aussitôt qu'il parut et le libraire menacé de la Bastille s'il ne nommait l'auteur". (Courney, 'Bibliographie des éditions Raynal', L-04 1782:01. Bien complet des 16 pages de "Procès-verbal des coutumes générales du Baillage de Vitry en Pertois, dit le François", imprimées en petits caractères et interfoliées entre les pages 348 et 349, qui ne figurent qu'à un petit nombre d'exemplaires. Un chapitre: "Description et origine de la ville de Vitry" figure dans les feuillets préliminaires et de remarquables "Observations concernant la navigation" aux p. 353-372.
