Autograph letter sealed 'Mustafa Zeki', sent to Mazhar Pasha who was the commander of naval forces located in Chios Island (Sakiz Adasi) in the Archipelago, for the fortification to Chios fortress and around, and preparation of an exploration report and a map.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter/document signed/sealed by Mustafa Zeki Pasha who was Tophâne-i Âmire müsiri [i.e. Grandmaster and Commander of Artillery / Brigadier and Ministry of Military Schools], sent to Mazhar Pasha who was the commander of naval forces located in Chios Island (Sakiz Adasi) in the Archipelago, for the fortification to Chios fortress and around, and preparation an exploration report and a map. 34x21 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. 1 p. It's written in a beautiful and legible riq'a script. Including 23 lines. Full. Zeki Pasha was one of the most trusted Ottoman generals and statesmen of Sultan Abdulhamid II. He served as Tophane Counselor for 18 years during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. In 1899, Italian architect Alexandre Vallaury built the 'Tophane Müsiri Zeki Pasa Mansion (Yali)', one of the most valuable estates of Istanbul, on his behalf. In 1908, he fell out of favor with the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy by Union and Progress Society (Ittihad ve Terakki Cemiyeti) and was deported first to Büyükada and then to Rhodes. 4to., First and Sole Edition, with a frontispiece, 25 plates on 18, numerous illustrations (one full-page) in the text and front endpaper map in red and black; original grey-blue cloth, upper board blocked with ship's crest in blue, very neatly recased with old endpapers preserved, a very good, clean copy. This copy was formerly in the possession of G.A.J. Seymour (possibly Chief Shipwright). HMS Howe's last wartime commission took her from Scapa Flow to Auckland, including the UK naval ports, Gibraltar, Algiers, Port Said, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Trincomalee, Singapore, Colombo, Fremantle, Sydney and Auckland. Then she travelled across the Pacific to take part in air strikes against Leyte. Then back to Fremantle and on to Durban (where this publication seems to have been printed), Cape Town, Mombassa, the Seychelles and Colombo again, after which she retraced her outward route back to the UK. This record is the usual ship's mixture of chronology, geography, anecdote, private reminiscence, humour, cartoons and Crossing the Line. There is much coverage of her gunnery for which she was renowned throughout the Pacific Fleet. AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE OPERATIONAL RECORD OF THE KGV BATTLESHIPS IN WWII. RARE. THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF CAPTAIN JOHN WILLIAM JOSSELYN RN AND BEARS HIS NEAT HOLOGRAPH SIGNATURE (DATED 1919) ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. During WWII, Captain J.W. Josselyn commanded INTREPID (1939-1942), CARADOC (1942-1943), and HAWKINS (from 1943). It was whilst in command of INTREPID that he took part (together with INGLEFIELD and IVANHOE) in the sinking of U-45 by depth charge off the south-west coast of Ireland in October 1939.
