Acquaforte e puntasecca misure: mm 201 x 332 Pittore e incisore italiano. In basso a destra oltre l'inciso firma dell'autore "U. Dell'Orto" a penna. 'In 1754 he became a fellow of the Royal Society, and in the following year established his reputation as one of the most acute observers of his time by the publication of An Essay Towards a Natural History of the Corallines. . . . imperfectly comprehended by Linnaeus, he established the animal nature of this group of organisms'. Luca Antonio Porzio (1639-1724), chief professor of medicine and anatomy in the Royal University of Naples. It was published as a direct result of Porzio's presence in Venice in 1683 when the forces of the Ottoman Empire were laying siege to Vienna. The health of sailors is a short section, but on page 236 the author recommends keeping root vegetables in sand and fruit as juice "I am very certain, that the juices of fruits, as Oranges, Lemons, and Apples, might be boil'd to the consistence of a thick syrup or Rob, and preserved in proper vessels for any given times, so that a spoonful or more of it might occasionally be taken, dissolved in water, with very good effect, as a preservative against the bad consequences of such an animal diet as I have above taken notice of." Son of Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Douglas, Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861) enjoyed a distinguished military career and developed a well-earned reputation for enquiry and innovation. By 1811 he had perfected and patented 'Douglas's reflecting circle'; in 1816 he published an important study of military bridges and in 1819 a treatise on Carnot's system of fortification. He then turned his attention to naval matters and produced the first edition of his famous volume on naval gunnery in 1820. It is a comprehensive study covering theoretical, practical and tactical aspects and its impact was significant. Its success, both at home and in translation, led eventually to the establsihment of 'H.M.S. Excellent' as a gunnery training school.

16 vols., sm. 8vo., with very numerous photographs, diagrams, maps and charts throughout; cloth, backstrips lettered in silver, all very good to near fine copies in dustwrapper, one or two dustwrappers lightly sunned at backstrip. Ian Allan's acclaimed 'Sea Battles in Close-Up' series, launched in 1970 and continued through to 1976, constitutes a landmark in British naval publishing. Compiled by a carefully selected cadre of authors, many of whom have since developed reputations as naval historians of international standing, the 16 volumes are uniformly praised for their accuracy and detail; certainly their relatively small physical size wholly belies their value and importance to scholar and historian alike. The set comprises 1. Watts (A.J). Loss of the Scharnhorst; 2. Pack (S.W.C). Night Action off Cape Matapan; 3. Schofield (B.B). Loss of the Bismarck; 4. Bennett (G). Battle of the River Plate; 5. Pack (S.W.C). The Battle for Crete; 6. Schofield (B.B). The Attack on Taranto; 7. Bennett (G). The Loss of the Prince of Wales & Repulse; 8. Frere-Cook (G). The Attacks on the Tirpitz; 9.

A very attractive flag chart issued by Johann Baprist Homann. The plate features 139 flags of various nations, factions, and trading companies. Among the more interesting flags are those of the Dutch West India Company (G.W.C. /Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie) and the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C. / Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie). The premier placement of English flags in the upper left quadrant suggest that this chart may have been copied from an English source. This map is probably derived from a Dutch flag chart issued by Cornelis Danckerts c. 1700. Johann Baptist Homann was a German geographer and cartographer; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt; numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder. Homann died in Nuremberg in 1724 and was succeeded by his son Johann Christoph (1703-1730). The company carried on upon his death as Homann heirs company, managed by Johann Michael Franz and Johann Georg Ebersberger. After subsequent changes in management the company folded in 1852. Etching with fine original colour, a small tear in the white bottom margin, otherwise in good condition.
