A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Gosse was the most important marine biologist of the nineteenth century, the father of sea-side studies and of the aquarium, and a true field naturalist. Some of the ads at the rear of the book are 'Practical Instructions of Tank Management and a list of descriptions, illustrations and prices of whatever relates to Aquaria' in keeping with the aquarium craze at the time which was in a large part encouraged by Gosse's book on aquariums and his others on marine biology. This book is based on a family holiday on the Welsh side of the Bristol Channel in 1854. Freeman & Wertheimer 67. Superb illustrations, many on microscopic life.
8vo., First and Sole Edition, with numerous plates and a folding map (lightly spotted); red cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt, a very good, bright, clean copy. The editor was almost certainly the Rev. Harold E. Stevens, ship's chaplain from 1 January 1927 to the end of the commission. The first of the Royal Navy's two 'E'-class Cruisers (the other being HMS Emerald), Enterprise was launched on Clydebank in 1919 and completed at Devonport in 1926. During the last phase of her first commission she was commanded by Pridham-Whipple, who (commanding the Mediterranean cruiser squadrons for Cunningham) became one of Britain's finest fighting admirals of WWII. The Enterprise's own WWII service comprised Atlantic escort 1939-40; Home Fleet 1940 (including the Norwegian campaign during which she supported the army at Narvik); South Atlantic 1940-41 (including Force H and Mers-el-Kebir); East Indies 1941-42; Eastern Fleet 1942-43; Home Fleet 1943-44 (including Normandy/Utah); Reserve and Trooping 1945. After long and faithful service she was decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped at Newport in the same year. The suggestion that a book of the first commission should be produced came from the ship's company and a copy was printed for everyone who had served in her for a year or more. Since her complement averaged 570 it is clear that few copies can have survived, let alone in this condition; we have been unable so far to trace another. EXTREMELY SCARCE

In 8°; (4), 152 pp. Brossura editoriale azzurra con pecetta con collocazione in biblioteca privata della persona che ha applicato l'ex-libris all'interno del piatto anteriore, militare dell'esercito italiano. Buono-ottimo stato di conservazione. Raro studio del celebre patriota e militare della Marina Italiana, Luigi Fincati. L'autore è considerato fra i massimi esperti di tattica navale dell'ottocento. L'operaparte da casi pratici per analizzare tattiche ed errori. Un capitolo intero è dedicato alla battaglia di Lissa del 1866. Dopo lo scoppio dell'insurrezione veneziana del marzo 1848, con il grado di tenente di fregata della marina repubblicana fu inviato, probabilmente il 24 di quel mese, a Pola, dov'era la flotta, a portare l'ordine di rientro a Venezia, nel tentativo di recuperare le navi (il precedente tentativo era fallito). Arrestato dagli Austriaci, rimase per tre mesi in carcere a Lubiana. Nel 1859 la marina sarda lo chiamò in servizio. Col grado di luogotenente di vascello si imbarcò sulla "Carlo Alberto" e prese parte alle fasi salienti degli avvenimenti che nel corso di un biennio portarono all'Unità italiana, ottenendo due medaglie d'argento e il cavalierato dell'Ordine militare di Savoia per il blocco e l'assedio alla fortezza di Gaeta. Nella nuova marina italiana, lacerata dai contrasti tra ufficiali di diversa provenienza regionale, il cammino del F. fu sicuro. Dal 1864 al maggio 1866, con l'incarico di ispettore per le costruzioni navali, fu inviato in Francia per controllare i lavori commissionati all'industria transalpina. Rimpatriato alla vigilia della nuova guerra, col grado di capitano di fregata di 1 classe, comandò la corazzata "Varese" a Lissa, nella sconfitta che portò sotto processo l'ammiraglio C. Persano. Il F. pubblicò l'opuscolo anonimo Ancona e Lissa (Ancona 1866); opuscolo che sostenne l'accusa di inettitudine del comandante l'armata. Fu anche parlamentare del nuovo Regno d'Italia. Importante opera per comprendere la storia della marina militare italiana.

LOOSELY INSERTED IS A SMALL CARD BEARING THE AUTOGRAPH OF IAN FRASER VC, US LEGION OF HONOR. A standard and well-illustrated survey incorporating several rare photographs. This is the much-needed re-issue of the original edition of 1996. Fraser's exploit in command of XE-3 is covered on pp. 178-182 and his award of the Victoria Cross on pp.181-2. Lt. Fraser was awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring attack on the Japanese heavy cruiser Takao in the Straits of Johor, Singapore on 31 July 1945. Fraser, in command of midget submarine XE-3, completed a long and dangerous infiltration through mined waters and successfully lowered his craft under the target, which lay atop a depression in the sea bed. His diver James Magennis left the craft to attach limpet mines to Takao's hull. Next, the XE-3's two main side-saddle charges had to be released, but the starboard charge became lodged and a nerve-wracking interval passed before Magennis could free it. Magennis then re-entered XE-3 and the craft escaped. The charges detonated successfully and the heavy cruiser settled on the bottom for the remainder of the war. Both Fraser and Magennis were awarded the Victoria Cross. Mulholland & Jordan, K14 (recording the first edition).
