Second printing inscribed presentation copy of this excellent first-hand account which was written contemporaneously by the author during his 12000 mile air trip in a Moth biplane across the country. The memoir details their stopovers in the desert of West Texas an Idaho farm field a frantic cross-wind takeoff from a California airport to avoid a lawman wanting to see the plane’s Federal registration and finally reaching Alaska where the author and his copilot “Pete†Blodgett both hunted and killed Alaska Brown Bears on Admiralty Island. Lombard 1895-1985 was a World War I veteran pilot navigated the yacht “Nina†to a Queen’s Cup Race off the Coast of Spain in 1928 flew the first plane to cross the Rocky Mountains in 1928 and would later serve as director of the Dow Jones & Co. for 30 years. Colour pictographic/pictorial map of Asia 23.2 x 30.1 cms gilt double-rule border printed on a folding decorative menu card 32 x 50 cms open highlighted in gilt text in English French and Japanese central fold and later central vertical crease in very good condition. Pan Am menu card for First Class passengers dubbed "The President Special" the deluxe cuisine by fabled Maxim's of Paris "Good food is the basis for true happiness". Passengers were feted with gourmet meals on bone china with silver cutlery. First edition of this catalogue documenting the post-World War I efforts by Sweeney who created a hands-on vocational training school in 1908. By 1921 he had completed the massive new building including 12 acres of floor space and on-site rooms for 800 students allowing for over 8000 in enrollment by the post-World War I era. Such courses as these automotive training schools provided vital expertise for fueling the expansion of automobile manufacturers auto repair shop and service stations later during the 1920s. Following demobilization after World War I the U.S. Congress which had refused to allocate funds to compensate and support veterans when passing the 1917 conscription laws so these industrial training programs were given grants and specific citations in order to encourage returning soldiers to avoid union activity. The Sweeney Building on Pershing Road has continued to be used as office space in Kansas City after the school closed in 1929 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
