Most of the route will take the daring girls over the practically uninhabited desert of the interior. They will pause for several days in a Central Australian Oasis for the Kangaroo Hunting. From Darwin the girls will proceed to Java Singapore China and the United States. After this historic flight Patterson went on to found the Pulitzler-Prize winning publication Newsday. Contains some wonderful early aviation ads including those for United Airlines Lochheed Aircraft Corporation Firestone Airplane Tires and American Steel/ Another ad shows past winners of the Bendix Trophy Race for the past eight years. The 1938 winner was a woman named Jacqueline Cochrane who flew from Burbank California to Cleveland in 8 hours and 10 minutes. Program also includes a daily program of events. Black and white photo of Jacqueline Cochran in her plane. 9 x 7 in. Signed and inscribed by Cochran in blue ink. Speed record typed at bottom edge: "15KM Women's Speed Record 844.2 MPH". Cochran was a pioneer in women's aviation and one of the first woman pilots in the U.S. Air Force retiring at rank of colonel. She served as a transport pilot with the British and US Air Force during WWII and was one of the first women awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. In addition to her decorated military career Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier on May 18 1953 and to this day she holds more speed records than any other pilot in history. Sill this 2nd Lieutenant from Kansas worked on reconnaissance infantry contact puff target sketching railroad yards machine gun proficiency. He then transferred to the School of Aerial Gunnery at Selfride Field Michigan from 9/30/18 to 10/19/18. All courses are listed with hours spent grading signed by instructors. Laid-in are orders to report to Selfride Field and a letter dated October 19 1918 naming the log's owner as being now rated as an Aerial Observer.
