194515609Glenview IL: Naval Air Training Command 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good . 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound.

An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH. None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback books

Old folds lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature otherwise a fine letter with a bold clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century.

Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."

Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. He died in New York in 1992. unknown books

17147Chuck Yeager. Famous Aviator. Best known for being the first pilot to break the Sound Barrier. Typed letter signed by Yeager in which he writes about breaking the sound barrier. No date. 8 1/2 x 11 in. "Chuck Yeager" printed at top of page. "Many aviators believed that man was not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound they assumed the resulting drag rise may tear the aircraft apart. I was apprehensive about trying to break the sound barrier. But you don't let that apprehension affect your job. On October 14 1947 Glamorous Glenn with me in the cockpit was lifted to an altitude of 25000 feet by a World War II B-29 bomber and then they released my X-1 through the bomb bay. Once in the air I was rocketing to 40000 feet and exceeding 662 miles per hour which was the sound barrier at that altitude. As I always said you don't concentrate on risks. You concentrate on results." He also writes on his activity as a flying ace in WWII: "I flew 64 missions over Europe.and shot down 13 German planes. I was also shot down myself once over France." 2 original fold lines. Bold signature at bottom of page and In very good condition. unknown books

One printed sheet of grey-green paper folded once vertically. 4 pp. 9-3/8" x 5-3/4"

Claude Grahame-White was the Glamour Boy of early aviation. somewhat of a playboy with no engineering background whatsoever Grahame-White became enamoured of flying when in 1908 he saw the Wright's demonstrate their invention to the French crowds at Camp d’Auvours. Within a relatively short time self-taught Grahame-White soloed his Blériot without a formal lesson. He quickly made a name for himself as a dashing aviator when in 1910 J. V. Martin of the Harvard Aeronautical Society invited him to compete in the first Boston-Harvard Meet. With the promise of a $50000 retainer & expenses Grahame-White accepted. Grahame-White won that one and others as he thrilled spectators with his races & aerial exhibitions such as that announced in this "One-man Show" program. This rare survivor lists the divers aerial stunts to be performed by Grahame-White during the day. "With the Bleriot Monoplane" includes a dive from 4000 feet "with engine stopped." "With the Farman Biplane" the 12 planned events include "Aerial switchback flying" "The corkscrew glide spin from a high altitude." & "Knocking down ninepins placed on the ground without alighting." With this sort of exhibition and his dashing & flamboyant personality the handsome Grahame-White gave the new aviation field previously dominated by engineers something that had been lacking to date. a 'sexy' nature. unknown books
