First edition in English of this work examining the preparations and efforts of the Salomon August Andree’s doomed Polar Expedition via balloon in 1897 traveling with Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg. Andree beleived he could steer the hydrogen-filled balloon with a drag line but this proved ineffective and his Polar balloon the Ornen Eagle leaked far more hydrogen than expected and as of the end of this contemporary crashed and disappeared. In 1930 the expedition’s last camp was discovered with documents and photos recording how they’d crashed on a drifting ice pack poor Arctic gear and died on Kvitoya in Svalbard. Based on the crash of the airship Italia flown by Umberto Nobile in May 1928 near the North Pole and the subsequent rescue which cost Roald Amundson his life Capra intended to emulate the success of Wings. This fascinating film was shot in a semi-documentary style providing splendid footage of the USS Los Angeles mid-air docking/recovery of a fighter aircraft and the crash of an airship during a storm just a few years before the Hindenburg disaster. The movie starred Jack Holt Ralph Graves and Fay Wray two years before her huge success in King Kong. Contains some wonderful early aviation ads including those for United Airlines Lochheed Aircraft Corporation Firestone Airplane Tires and American Steel/ Another ad shows past winners of the Bendix Trophy Race for the past eight years. The 1938 winner was a woman named Jacqueline Cochrane who flew from Burbank California to Cleveland in 8 hours and 10 minutes. Program also includes a daily program of events. A great piece of aviation history.</p>

First American edition of this excellent and well-illustrated work on aviation by Santos-Dumont who was a pioneering Brazilian aviator at the turn-of-the-19th- into the 20th-Century. The diminutive playboy and talented engineering machinist raced motorized tricycles Locomobiles and began building his own dirigibles and in 1901 piloted his Airship No. 6 sround the Eiffel Tower. In 1904 after publication of this work he began experimenting heavier-than-air aircraft building an unsuccessful helicopter in 1905 and in 1906 a biplane reminiscent of the Wright Flyer dubbed a “canard†by the French and in 1906 set the first aviation record in Europe. Brazilians like to claim he preceded the Wright Bros. because he made his first flights in front of huge public crowds but aviation experts and historians demur. The Century Co., hardcover
