1938042171New York: Harcourt Brace and Co. 1938. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. Inscribed by Authors. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Red cloth spine panel lettered and front cover airplane device in gilt. Text block edges a bit dulled by age otherwise essentially as issued though lacking dust jacket. Stated first edition. xii275 pp. illus. w/ maps. Signed on half-title "For The Morgans / Anne" and while the signature bears a passing resemblance to that of Anne Morrow Lindbergh who frequently inscribed copies to personal friends simply as "Anne" we have doubts that this example is genuine. More often than not Listen! the Wind was inscribed by both Lindberghs given that Charles executed the map illustrations and this example is written on a slant rather than the author's typical horizontal inscription. However the inscription is intriguing insofar as it is "For the Morgans" which would most likely be Anne's sister Constance and her husband Aubrey Morgan who had married in 1937 the year before publication three years after the death of Aubrey's first wife Elisabeth who was also Anne and Con's older sister. Oram who raised funds for humanitarian and conservation groups the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh writes with his suggestions for the World Wildlife Fund's membership drive and letter. "Before I send out another 'conservation' letter I would like to have a definite understanding of how replies are to be acknowledged by WWF." "In regard to the brochure enclosed with letters such as this I wonder if it should contain some sort of WWF membership application -- the five-dollar type of thing." He goes on to suggest the possibility that "Membership involves an automatic payment each year whereas the present contribution form brochure I am looking at enclosed casts the contributor loose after his check is sent and requires new bait for a new bite in another year." He concludes by saying that while he likes the present brochure he suggests emphasizing the blue whale in the next one. Signed "Charles". The first of these was designated Aerodrome No. 0 and proved a failure. The second machine Aerodrome No. 1 was powered by a carbonic acid gas and later by compressed air. Aerodrome No. 2 also built in 1891 was also a disappointment. Aerodrome No. 3 1892 was of stronger construction and was modified a number of times. A better means of heating the steam was tested on Aerodrome No. 3 and was a decided improvement and was incorporated into Aerodrome No. 4. By the end of 1893 Aerodrome No. 4 was ready for testing and a launching device atop a house boat was built. </em> unknown

Air Mobility Workhorse recounts the operational history of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules in Royal Australian Air Force RAAF service spanning the A E and H models from 1958 to 2012 leaving the current J model to be covered in the future. The C-130 was the catalyst for a transformational shift from Second World War technology to leading-edge aircraft systems in RAAF air mobility and the broader Air Force. The Hercules has become iconic in Australian culture as the first thing viewers often see of news reports when Australia reaches out to the rest of the world to offer aid in times of disaster. The author’s intimate knowledge of the aircraft along with his extensive service on them brings an insight that only someone who has flown them in testing times can bring. His extensive connections within the Hercules community have brought their stories ‘from the inside’ to give readers a rare glimpse of service in military aviation. It is a detailed and balanced reflection of what the mighty Hercules did for Australia and how it affected those who flew it maintained it supported it flew as passengers or benefited from the missions it conducted. This aircraft was truly Australia’s Air Mobility Workhorse. . New. 1st Edition. Hardback. Big Sky Publishing hardcover
