1945138169The Philippines: 960th Engineer Aviation Topographic Company 1945. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. The Philippines 960th Engineer Aviation Topographic Company 1945. Oblong quarto 255 × 288 mm 45 leaves printed rectos only comprising the title-cover on a background of a collage of some two dozen illustrations and 44 leaves containing 133 illustrations with all illustrations reproduced from photographs. Shoelace-bound three-colour pictorial card cover a little worn at the extremities with trifling surface loss to silverfish; two leaves a little soiled; expert conservation to small chips and tears to the edges of four leaves; minor signs of age and use including some annotations - see below; overall a very good copy. The first leaf contains a large illustration of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning designed as a fighter but used in a variety of roles including aerial reconnaissance. An inscription in ink on the illustration identifies the pilot as '1st. Lt. Alexander Roberts Dec. 1943 New Guinea'. Written in the margin below the illustration is '960th Photo Recon. Dobodura New Guinea Non. sic 1943 - Feb. 1944 Ie Shima April 1945 P.I. Feb. 44 - Ap. 1945 Honolulu Sept 1945 deact.'. The servicemen in the four illustrations on the fourth leaf are identified: from left to right top to bottom they are 'MSgt. Burts' 'Ingelmann' 'Johnson' and '"Jesse" James and Samualson'. The dog on the next page is 'Killer'. At the rear Ernie Pyle's grave is identified. <p>'The second phase of the Okinawa Campaign consisted of the objectives of Ie Shima which housed the big airfield of the islands and Motobu Peninsula. With Rear Admiral Lawrence F. Reifsnider USN commanding the attack group the U.S. Army's 77th division landed on April 16 1945. The invading force thought that the Japanese had abandoned the airfield due to aerial photo reconnaissance but they met about 3000 men as they moved towards the center of the island. Not unlike the Battle for Iwo Jima the island had networks of underground tunnels enhanced by Mt. Gosuki but the island was secured on April 21. Famed War Correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed on Ie Shima while covering the occupation. To repair the destruction caused by prior bombing and naval gunfire support U.S. Navy Seabees repaired the airstrips. Of note the island was utilized by the Japanese Surrender delegation in mid-August 1945 as a stop point between Japan and Manila Bay Philippines for negotiations with General Douglas A. McArthur USA' National Museum of the United States Navy online. <p>The illustrations in this rare souvenir cover a wide range of the activities of the 960th in the Pacific theatre during the Second World War. 960th Engineer Aviation Topographic Company paperback
151979430Hammondsport New York and Newport News Virginia 1915-1917. The captions were formerly attached to the photographs with paperclips with some crimping to the photographs and captions. Some marginal damage to a couple of the photographs; images unaffected and quite interesting. . Various sizes; 14 measure 8 / 10 inches; 54 are 4 x 6 inches. . Many of the captions are quite informative if a bit illiterate for example: "Capt. Baldwin in the first Derigable sic were built for the U.S. Gov. Capt. Baldwin built his machine and was accepted by U.S. Gov. on all trials. Capt. Baldwin--inventor of a Parachute and first man to ever jump. built at Hammondsport." In addition to the the 68 photographs that clearly belong to a single archive there are two additional 8 x 10" Curtiss photographs and 15 additional smaller early aviation photographs. unknown
118695Fifteen gelatin silver prints one 127 × 129 mm all others 134 × 139 mm slightly curled around the vertical axis; in uniformly fine condition Numbers pencilled on the verso of all but the small print include '/43' so we will suggest 1943 as the date. The only caption is a later one in ballpoint pen identifying Darling Harbour; there are another two featuring the same general area. Eight feature Garden Island prominently in all but one instance and four focus on Cockatoo Island; the former was a major naval base and the latter the main ship repair facility during the Second World War. Although the photographs are not credited given the nature of the images and the fact they were taken during wartime they were presumably taken with authorisation. Offered with the photographs is 'Sydney an Aerial Close-up' by Walter Brooks with photography by Neil Sutherland 1986; those familiar with Sydney in 2024 may derive some pleasure in drawing two comparisons . 16 items. unknown
118696Very Good. All are gelatin silver prints on thick stock; eight are oblique photographs 207 × 154 mm; two are vertical views approximately 165 × 220 mm; the larger ones are slightly creased at the corners one of them a little more so; the others are in excellent condition. All images are captioned in the negative. All eight oblique views carry the same date 25 June 1918 preceded by 'A3 AEO 62°' ranges from 110 to 121. Place names on them are Hamel Hamel Wood Somme Accroche Wood Tailloux Wood and Vaire Wood. The vertical images are dated 3 May and 27 June 1918 and carry a larger set of alpha-numeric references commencing 'A3 AE A 715' and '35 AE B 929' respectively. All ten prints have the signature 'Capt Sexton' in indelible pencil on the verso. Digitised service records indicate the signature is that of Eric James Sexton of the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh; he enlisted on 14 August 1914 shortly before his 21st birthday and was appointed to the 10th Battalion with the rank of lieutenant. He was wounded at the landing at Gallipoli promoted to captain the following day and later invalided back to Australia disembarking on 6 August 1915. By January 1916 he was declared fit again for active service and re-embarked in April for England where he performed various training roles. On 14 February 1917 he transferred to the Australian Machine Gun Training Depot with the rank of major. He embarked for Australia on 12 March 1918 arriving in Melbourne on 22 May 1918. Accordingly Sexton did not serve in France and was a major not a captain by the time these photographs were produced. We cannot explain the anomalies but will let the photographs speak for themselves. Significantly they show the area where the important Battle of Hamel was fought on 4 July 1918. <p>'Hamel was a big battle in miniature involving the experimentation of tanks and small ammunition drops as part of a broader all-arms offensive. While a coordinated offensive was not a new approach to warfare Hamel represented the culmination of three years of learning and innovation on the Western Front testing an all-inclusive approach to mobile warfare. The flawless execution of the operation resulted in Hamel becoming a model for future operations on the Western Front. In his account of the event Monash famously wrote that "the perfected modern battle plan is like nothing so much as a score for an orchestral composition where the various arms and units are the instruments and the tasks they perform are their respective musical phrases' Ellen Cresswell: 'The Experiment - Innovations at the Battle of Hamel' Australian War Memorial website. 10 items. unknown

191960735Great Lakes Chicago & Waukegan IL: Naval Aviation Training School L. Blakemore Isaack Wallenstein & Western Photo Studio Photographers ca. 1919-1921. Oblong atlas folio. 21.5 x 9 in. 43 leaves unnumbered. on thick black paper stock. Contemporary Spruce plywood post-binder covers same as wood used for spars and biplane bodies in World War I rounded corners piano hinge front joint gilt decorative lettering & logo on front cover minor scuffing shelfwear still VG exemplar. This outstanding souvenir album depicts the height of the vital Naval Aviation Training School which provided essential technical expertise and training to entire generations of Naval Aviators and Naval aviation mechanics and carpenters through World War I and beyond. Founded originally in 1904 when a board appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt selected two farms of north of Lake Bluff IL as a training station which originally covered 172 acres. By Armistice Day at the end of World War I the facility had expanded to 1200 acres and over 45000 men underwent training. Of particular interest in this album are the 36 panoramic photographs documenting Naval Aviator and Naval Aviation mechanic classes for the 15th Regiment and 1st Battalion 15th Regiment from 1919-1920 as well as class rooms machine shops for aviation mechanics and Naval instructors. Others encompass the cutaway model Aviation engines with instructional charts on the surrounding wals the carpenter’s shop with aviation machinery jigs on work benches and airline bodies under construction. One photo depicts the Motor Laboratory Steam Laboratory and Equipment from the USS Eagle 25 at the Aviation Mechanics’ School a US Navy patrol boat which had sunk in a storm in June 1920 and then been raised and sold off as a hulk by Dec. 1921. Other panoramic photos capture the Riggers’ School classroom at Great lakes with full scale biplanes and seaplanes scale model dirigible the Coppersmith School classroom the Fittings classroom with airplane propellers hanging from the walls dip baths for machined parts and nickel plate coating and several of the Naval Aviation School football baseball and other sporting teams including the largest panorama of the Inter-Training Station Baseball championship team from Great Lakes. Wallenstein 1861-1958 was a longtime Chicago photographer through the first four decades of the 20th Century who operated his studio out of his 3928 N. Kenneth home and specialized in panoramic photographs. Western Photo Studio in Waukegan IL appears to have been short-lived as the Waukegan IL directories from 1918-1921 do not list the business but possibly connected with the Western Union Telegraph offices as the address was interchangeable. Volpe 1885-1950 began working in New York originally as a bookbinder before enlisting as an aviation mechanic with the US Navy in 1910 assigned originally to the newly formed ground school in Pensacola and later became Chief Warrant Officer Pilot Airman and Instructor who oversaw the Naval Aviation Training School from 1918-1921. He was also the assistant Athletic officer for baseball and tennis at the base. Naval Aviation Training School, L. Blakemore, Isaack Wallenstein, & Western Photo Studio (Photographers), unknown
