This book covers the state of model airplane building and flying when published. The author was with the Smithsonian Institution and prepared this book for the Playground and Recreational Association of America which conducted local and national tournaments of flying models. The Committee which operated these tournaments included Orville Wright Charles Lindberg Richard Byrd and many other important aviators. The book contains detailed plans and instruction sufficient to recreate some of these early models. A rare promotional guide to the air route from London to Basra produced for travellers destined for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company's refinery at Abadan in Iran. A map shows the route passing through the eastern Mediterranean and Egypt before arriving in Iraq. The text attempts to give the impression of a well-organized journey: "At Basra you will be met by a representative of the Company who will help you with the Customs and other formalities. After a meal at the Airport Hotel you will find that arrangements have been made for your onward journey to your destination". The map to the verso shows critical infrastructure across the Middle East including oil pipelines and railways. Octavo. With 4 photographs and 2 colour maps. 1918185856Glasgow: 1918. Airframes bombs and engines A handsome album depicting the construction and trial of an early seaplane on the banks of the Clyde. The Fairey Campania built from 1917 to 1919 was among the earliest aircraft produced for use on aircraft carriers. Some 62 airframes were built of which 12 were subcontracted to Barclay Curle & Co. the Glasgow shipbuilders who compiled this album. The 20 images display the first airframe in various stages of construction along with bomb-rack trials and a shot of the 350hp Eagle VIII the first aero engine produced by Rolls Royce. Oblong quarto album. With 20 gelatin silver landscape photographs 216 x 164 mm to 115 x 72mm mounted recto on 20 green card leaves with manuscript captions in blue ink. Original green cloth front cover lettered in gilt and decoratively embossed in blind. Presentation business card of one Leonard R. Mackay of Langside Glasgow tipped to initial leaf.
