1932185152Hong Kong: K. A. J. Chotirmall & Co. c.1932. A brochure issued by a major Sindhi trading concern. Founded in Jakarta in 1875 the firm entered the Hong Kong market in 1888 as part of a programme of expansion across Asia. It built a reputation on trading textiles but branched out into furniture ivory and porcelain wares and fans. This copy is accompanied by a nine-page pamphlet issued by the company around the same time and listing the types of goods it exports. The contents match the last few leaves of the brochure. Quarto. Many illustrations internally. Original orange wrappers front cover lettered in black. The six sections record race results finishes by distance jockey performance over the season horse records winning owners and winning trainers. Octavo. Throughout each booklet particular emphasis is placed on the affordability of travel in Hong Kong and much effort is made to portray the colony as a romantic idyll. . 1534American President Lines. First Edition. Near Fine. Travel poster printed in full color recto only. Measures 23.25 inches x 34.5 inches 59cm x 87cm. Near Fine condition with slight waviness along left edge that would be readily flattened under glass. No tearing no creases but two slight abrasions verso as if tape had been hastily removed not affecting image. Very slight fading to color along the "LSON" of Wilson but only slightly perceptible and that might be a production flaw or design effect as to show variation in the polished brass look of nameplate lettering. The other copy we've seen had a similar condition. Not a reproduction. Original early-60s travel poster promoting travel to Hong Kong one of the Asia ports called at by the S.S. President Wilson a passenger cruise ship of the American President Lines. The American President Lines APL was founded with the US government's acquisition of the faltering Dollar Shipping Line. APL implemented round-the-world passenger service enhancing its fleet in 1946 with the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson. The ships were promoted as "your American hotel abroad."<p>Vintage photograph of the SS President Wilson sailing past a sea-going Chinese junk juxtaposes the luxury of modern passenger liner travel with the age-old traditional Chinese sailing craft. Original paper not linen-backed. Ephemera included with the poster includes a passenger manifest for a January 1958 sailing of the SS WIlson from San Francisco to Honolulu Yokohama Manila Hong Kong Kobe and return as well as two menus from the SS President Cleveland August 1959. Later issues have "With the Compliments of the Hong Kong Government Information Services" printed at the foot of the front cover. As Grantham in office 1947-57 writes "the booklet's cover symbolises the Hong Kong story. The harbour is the basic origin of the Colony on which its prosperity was founded; the fine modern buildings in the foreground are evidence of that prosperity while the figure of the cheerful Chinese labourer typifies the hundreds of thousands who have been attracted to Hong Kong by the opportunities it affords and the promise that in reward for labour there will always be something for the rice bowl" p. 3. 1957157747Hong Kong: Rotary Club of Kowloon 1957. A charming souvenir of the Rotary Club of Kowloon's annual fundraising bash for 1957 now hard to find in commerce and unrecorded in institutional collections. In the 1950s the club's balls were lavish affairs attracting everyone from the British governor downwards and garnering significant attention in the local press. The many adverts and messages from its commercial sponsors showcase a bygone era of Hong Kong business. Formed in 1948 in the wake of the Japanese occupation the club raised $350000 in its first ten years to fund community projects and scholarships. According to the menu printed in this programme this year members tucked into fruit cocktail consomme royale fillet of sole caprice Spanish-style roast chicken and pear belle Helene while the entertainment included dances impressions and bongo drumming.
