Binding very worn. Hardbound. The author Isaac W. Wiley was a pastor medical and educational missionary and influential bishop of the former Methodist Episcopal Church. Wiley College founded in 1873 by the Freemen's Aid Society to educate newly freed slaves was named for him. He served as a missionary for some years in China and returned to organize missionary activity in the Far East. This account of his travels makes interesting reading. He visited and describes many places customs sights religions. In China: Shanghai; Peking; Kiukiang; Foochow; Hong Kong; Canton - in Japan: Yokohama; Nagasaki; Tokio Tokyo; among other places. Plats insolés et présentant des frottis et tassements aux coins. Première page de garde avec plissures. Intérieur relativement assez frais avec des rousseurs et des brunissures éparses sur quelques pages. Malgré que ce livre soit considéré comme une des toutes première bande dessinée de l'histoire et surtout comme un " Enfantina ", il ne faut surtout pas le prendre uniquement comme tel. Il s'adresse aussi aux adultes avec son coté caricature politique, car il est réalisé à la fin de la guerre franco-chinoise, et après le congrès de Berlin de 1878 où l'Europe se partagea l'Afrique. L'auteur, Eugène Le Mouël fut romancier, poète, dessinateur, ancien Hydropathe, vice président des Hirsutes et collaborateur du Chat Noir. Il a aussi créé de nombreux autres personnages illustrés, par exemple Teuf-teuf, enfant moderne, ou le sapeur Gruyer qui inspira Christophe. Rarissime édition originale, que l'on trouve toujours dans un état juste correct.
