Four engravings together 22.5 x 30 cms captions and margins occupying a single newspaper leaf edges a little rough and chipped with a few creases scant spotting and toning the images in very good condition. Four engravings prepared for "The Graphic" illlustrated newspaper by the noted engraver and photographer Horace Harral 1817-1905. Prominent in the mosaic layout is the portrait of Li Hongzhang then Viceroy of Zhili. The murder of the British diplomat Augustus Raymond Margary and his staff in February 1875 whilst scoping potential overland trade routes between British India and China's provinces provoked a diplomatic crisis with China. It handed the British authorities an excuse to put pressure on the Qing government and hastened the build up of Chinese troops and armaments. War was averted with the negotiaton of the Yantai Treaty Chefoo Convention signed by Li and British diplomat Sir Thomas Wade. <br> <br>The four captioned engravings: <br> <br>1. Chinese soldiers; <br>2. Chinese gunboat on the Upper Yangtse-Kiang River; <br>3. Li-Hung-Chang Governor-General of Peichihli Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese Army; <br>4. Eight engravings the two largest 12 and 13.5 x 23 cms complete descriptive text running oveleaf on two consecutive newspaper leaves the leaves spotted with a few small edge tears but in very good condition. Detailed coverage of the visit of the British vessel H.M.S. Hermes at the time of the Taiping rebellion by a sailor on board. The lengthy commentary includes excerpts of his diary notes and the engravings are after sketches by him. The two main engravings are of "Nankin Chiefs and insurgents" and "H.M.S. Name of prior owner dated 1925 Chefoo and a tipped in letter to her - handwritten by J.L. Smith of the H.B.M Consulate Chefoo on the rear of the frontis. Rebacked in quarter leather presumably by the Chefoo club with their name printed on the lower spine fading. Head & tail of spine starting boards decorated and stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. A discard label on the front paste-down from the Chefoo Club Library dated 1925. Some age toning but a good firm copy.
