Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In modern full leather bdg. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 49 p. First and only Ottoman Turkish translation from German of this rare book on the description of China by Alfred Forke (1867-1944). Forke was a German sinologist. After studying law at the Universities of Geneva and Berlin, the first state examination in law and a doctorate to become a Dr. jur. in 1889 in Rostock and with a previous linguistic training at the Seminar for Oriental Languages, Forke worked as an interpreter for Chinese in the consulate service in Beijing from 1890 to 1903. In 1903 he succeeded his former teacher Carl Arendt as a professor at the Seminar for Oriental Languages in Berlin. As Otto Franke's successor, he moved to the University of Hamburg in 1923. There he headed the chair dedicated to China until 1935. In 1926 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. Forke's research focus was Chinese philosophy. Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 15,5 cm). In Turkish. 117 p. Uncommon enlarged second edition of this account of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 describing rising Japanese nationalism at the beginning of the 20th century, by Demirhan (1871-1964), sent with reference of Goltz Pasha (Colmar von der Goltz, 1843-1916) to Manchuria to observe the war in the ranks of the Japanese army as a Turkish colonel. He stayed for two months in Japan and more than a year in Manchuria. In addition to writing down his observations in the field of war in detail, he also took on the duty of ambassador due to the Ottoman Empire's lack of diplomatic relations with Japan and contributed to the development of relations between the two countries. He received a medal from the Japanese Emperor Meiji and returned home with the gifts that Emperor Meiji presented to Sultan Abdulhamid. His account was published first in 1937 in book form. Sait Pertev Demirhan, (1871-1964), was a Turkish soldier and politician. He is a graduate of Erkân-i Harbiye. He was an author, intellectual, Erkân-i Harbiye School teacher, 6. Army chief of staff, Harbiye Undersecretariat, 3rd Army Chief of Staff, 1st Corps, and 4. Corps Commands, Military Schools Inspector, Member of History and Geography Councils, Member of Military Appeals Court, a deputy of Erzurum. He was the son of Yanyali Mustafa Pasha. He graduated from Harbiye as a staff captain (1892). In 1894 he was sent to Germany to advance his military education. After being a colonel, he was appointed to the Staff School as a teacher (1904). He was sent to the Russo-Japanese War as an observer. He returned to Istanbul in 1906 and was promoted to "Pasha", and was appointed as the 6th Army Chief of Staff. He participated in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and was in the Caucasian Theater during the First World War. He was sent to Vienna as a military diplomat. Upon his return, he moved to Anatolia to participate in the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922). Only three copies are located in OCLC, two copies are in Turkish libraries, and one is in a German library; not in the US libraries. OCLC 60522483.

Un peu d'histoire : Quelques milliers de Français prirent part au façonnement de cette partie de la cité de Shanghai qu’on a appelée pendant un siècle la « Concession française » - où vivaient dans les années 1920 quelque 250.000 Chinois, l’équivalent alors de la population lyonnaise... Le 20 mai 1847 Charles de Montigny embarqua avec sa famille à bord du Duguay-Trouin en partance pour Shanghai pour y établir un Consulat français et négocier avec les Chinois l’établissement d’une concession, territoire sur lequel s’exercerait le droit français et où les Français eux-mêmes pourraient acquérir des biens immobiliers... En 1862, il existait trois concessions à Shanghai : la concession anglaise -la plus ancienne- et les concessions américaine et française. Les Anglais et les Américains avaient pour projet de réunir les trois concessions dont les traditions d’administration étaient jusque là totalement différentes afin de former une seule et même concession, plus cohérente, plus puissante et donc plus riche. Mais les Français refusèrent cette proposition et menèrent une « guerre d’indépendance » contre les autres concessions qui finirent par se regrouper pour former une concession internationale. Au milieu du 19e siècle, la colonie française ne comptait qu’une dizaine de personnes. En 1880, elle regroupait 33.660 habitants, dont 33.330 Chinois et quelques 330 « étrangers ». Vingt ans après, en 1900, la population avait triplé. La concession elle-même s’agrandit : des 66 hectares initiaux, elle passa à 144 en 1900. En 1906, la première ligne de tramway fut ouverte. Jusqu’en 1940, Shanghai connut un développement spectaculaire. Le domaine français gagna du terrain, les ruisseaux furent comblés et de grandes avenues furent construites. Après la Grande Guerre, la concession française était à son apogée. Magasins de mode, boutiques de luxe, épiceries fines, salons de thé proclamaient sa fortune. L’essor démographique se poursuivit : en 1934, la concession comptait plus d’habitants que la ville de Lyon. Elle s’organisa d’ailleurs comme une vraie ville avec ses églises, ses écoles, ses hôpitaux, ses banques, sa prison, son cimetière et... ses maisons closes. L’automobile fit également son entrée : 4.026 voitures circulaient dans la concession en 1931 contre contre 2 seulement en 1909.

Parte destacada del presente volúmen esta formada por las "Cartas" del Padre Sebastian Rasle (1658-1724) en las Misiones del Canadá, entre los Indios Abenakis, en Norridgewock, en el Rio Kennebec, en tiempo de las luchas contra los ingleses de New England, a manos de los cuales murió finalmente tras haber sido puesta a precio su cabeza. Su prestigio y fama entre los Abenakis fue imperecedero, su conocimiento de su lengua y costumbres impresionante, como lo prueba el manuscrito de su "Diccionario de la Lengua Abenaki", milagrosamente conservado hasta hoy en la Biblioteca del Harvard College y publicado en 1835. Zeev Wolf was a Hasidic rabbi best known for the present book, originally published in Koretz in 1787. It is important for its wealth of material on the history of ? Asidism and the teachings of its founders. This edition was published in conjunction with the displaced community of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin. During the 1930s and 1940s as the situation of the Jewish communities in Europe deteriorated, many students from the yeshivah escaped via Japan due the efforts of the Japanese Consul General in Kovno, Lithuania.
