Fortune was the first plant collector to travel in China after the conclusion of the Opium War, as a botanical collector for the Horticultural Society of London starting in 1843. Travel was not allowed for more than 30 miles past Shanghai, but he set off by boat from Shanghai, in Chinese costume complete with shaved head and pigtail and was the first westerner to reach Soochow and many other parts of China, collecting large numbers of plants and seeds. The book contains two chapters on the cultivation and manufacture of tea with suggestions on the possibilities of developing a tea industry in India.

Both volumes placed in the original cloth portfolio with some wear to extremities and a few repairs at folds inside. Both volumes in fine condition, plates are exceptionally well preserved. ~ First edition. Beautifully illustrated Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.

Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 185, [4] p. First Turkish translation published in book format of "Guerilla Warfare", written by Mao Zedong and translated with the same subject written by Che Guevara and an American officer. Mao's book contains a summary of knowledge and experience of the guerrilla resistance carried out within the national front established with Chang Kai-shek (1887-1975). Che Guevara's book, on the other hand, explains the technical results of guerrilla resistance, which was the basis of the Cuban War of Independence. The translator of this book, Can Yücel (1926-1999) was a Turkish poet noted for his use of colloquial language. Yücel also translated the works of Shakespeare, Lorca and Brecht into Turkish and his creative rendering of these authors are classics in their own right in Turkey. This book is translated from the original 1961 edition in English by "Cassel and Company Limited", London. Only two institutional copies in OCLC, all of them are in Turkish libraries: 949516672, 1030075606.

Trübner's Oriental Series. 1: Notes on Chinese Medieval Travellers to the West. 2: Notices of the Medieval Geography and History of Central and Western Asia. 3: Explanation of a Mongol-Chinese Medieval Map of Central and Western Asia. 4: Chinese Intercourse with the Countries of Central and Western Asia during the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. In the first of the four papers Bretschneider provides excerpts from five Chinese thirteenth-century narratives including the account of mongol Hulagu's expedition to Western Asia between 1253 and 1259, and the story of the King of Little Armenia Haithon's journey to Mongolia in 1254-55. The second paper gives a sketch of the records of Mohammedan authors of the Mongol invasions of Persia, Russia, Poland, Hungary and Germany. The medieval map of Asia discussed in the third paper represents the three Mongol empires west of China, governed by the descendants of Genghis Khan, and was possibly executed in China about 1330. The fourth paper dvelves on the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and specifically the Mongols and the Oirats as depicted in the Ming shu. Bretschneider was a Russian sinologue living in Peking, and had access to sources of materials inaccessible to most European scholars The same Emile Bretschneider author of the History of European botanical discoveries in China (1898) and Botanicon Sinicum (1882/96).
