First editions of these very scarce China Inland Mission periodicals published for supporters and as fundraiser during the 1920s for the noted interdenominational missionary society originally founded by Hudson Taylor in 1865. The 1920s were a period of great unrest famine and ongoing conflicts between various warlords as reflected in these contemporary missionary accounts. The China Inland Mission actively recruited women missionaries who in turn often proselytized to Chinese women to promote Christianity public health measures increased education and more. These issues encompass a range of topics including depredations by Chinese bandits working to keep girl’s schools open expanding the missionary efforts into Tibet and southeast Asia and much more. Collection of eight colour-printed Nianhua posters the central images onlaid within a stiff red paper border with a thin cream paper frame worn and discoloured and at the top of each a fine aqua paper border; the sheets a little creased two of the images with a visible tide-mark minor edge tears not affecting the images strengthened neatly on the verso with washi one with an early paper repair to the verso of the margin approx. 93 x 51.5cms sheet size in good condition. Eight Nianhua posters six feature traditional narrative tales one based on a woodblock print one possibly of a movie heroine and one other features a pair of chubby toddlers holding a tray of peaches and flowers symbols of longevity and abundance. . unknown

Striking pair of photographic portraits of Chinese women in costume by Ogawa Kazumasa 1860-1929 a "pivotal figure in Japanese photography.and arguably the most complete Japanese photographer of the Meiji era." see Terry Bennett "Photography in Japan 1853-1912. Colour poster for performances of the 中華人民共和國藝術團 in 1978 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. 106.5 x 76cm text in both English and traditional Chinese characters. The printed poster image is in red blue green black and white and the performance venue and times beneath the image appear to have been stencilled on later in black ink. The left edge minor creasing and a few small tears left edge not affecting image; some soft creasing in places tiny thumb tack holes in corners. Good condition with colours still vibrant. This landmark tour in 1978 by the Performing Arts Company of the PRC marked the first cultural exchange between China and the U.S. after the normalisation of relations just a few months earlier.The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles California at 665 W. Jefferson Boulevard was the location of the third major city performance on the tour after New York and Washington.
