186620127London: London Day & Son 1866. First edition. Hardcover. Good condition. An account of Augustus F. Lindley 1840 -1873 British officer writer and adventurer who fought for the Taiping insurgents in their rebellion against the Manchu dynasty one of the largest and bloodiest civil wars in history. The Taiping Rebellion 1850-64 was instigated by Hong Xiuquan and his followers whose goal was to create a "Heavenly Kingdom" in China with Christianity as the official religion. Lindley was a Royal Navy officer stationed in Hong Kong who resigned his commission in 1860 to work for a Taiping general as an artillery instructor. He also became a spokesperson for the cause courting Western support and procuring weapons and supplies. His wife Maria the daughter of the Portuguese consul at Macau served in the rebellion as a sniper and was killed in an ambush. Lindley remained in China until the fall of the Heavenly Kingdom in 1864. Two years later he wrote this work the only detailed account written of the Taiping Rebellion from the rebels' perspective.<br /> <br /> Two volumes royal 8vo: Vol I xvii iii 424pp; Vol II: vii i 425-842 complete. Very rare first German edition of 10 Chinese stories in the translation of the French edition. Interesting specially because of the introduction which contains explinations and notes about the contact between China and the West. It was published first in French edited by Jean-Pierre Abel-Remusat. The translation into German was made by Gottfried Wilhelm Becker. Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat 1788 - 1832 was the first professor at the College de France for Sinologie and is still known today for the publishing of a Chinese peom "Iu-kiao-li ou les deux cousines roman chinois" . unknown

18802592Havana: September 8 1880. Very good. Partially-printed broadside 6.5 x 8.25 inches completed in manuscript in Spanish and Chinese. Small marginal wormhole mild edge wear light toning. Ink stamp of the Consulado General at bottom-center. A scarce certificate issued in 1880 by the Chinese Consulate in Havana authenticating the registration and details of a Chinese laborer in Cuba. The printed form is completed in manuscript with the name of the recipient his age place of origin occupation and place of residence. The present examples were completed for a sixty-year-old laborer from Canton being called Pedro Pulido who was going to work and/or live at 48 Calle Figueroa in Havana. The printed text states that "El Cónsul General de China en la Habana certifica que blank ha hecho constar en este Consulado General ser súbdito de S.M. el Emperador de la China y como tal se halla inscrito en el Registro de dicho Consulado General segun número y filiacion anotados al márgen." The certificate is dated September 8 1880 and is stamped with the seal of the consulate in red and with the rubberstamped signature of the Consul General Lin Liang Yuan. The form are also bears two ink signatures in Chinese in the left margin a rare occurrence. An excellent document of the bureaucracy surrounding imported Chinese labor to Cuba in the last quarter of the 19th century. September 8 unknown

The entire piece measures 18 inches by 14.75 inches. Dano-French geographer and journalist Conrad Malte-Brun sometimes referred to simply as Malte-Brun is perhaps best remembered for coining the name for the geographic region Oceania French Océanie around 1812 as well as the name Indo-China. He was the founder of Les Annales des Voyages in 1807 and Les Annales des Voyages de la Géographie et de l'Histoire in 1819 which encouraged observations and reports as a basis for research. He became well known after contributing Tableau de la Pologne a treatise on the geography of Poland in 1807 as the First Empire troops established French tutelage in the region. In 1822-1824 he served as the first general secretary of the newly founded Société de Géographie. unknown

This atmospheric image of the fort with a junk and a yacht sailing in the river in the foreground is from the official account of the Laplace voyage in the Favorite 1830-32 by voyage artist François-Edmond Pâris 1806-1893. He was also a distributor of Chinese language Christian literature in Shanghai and region from 1847. <br> <br>At the General Conference of the Protestant Missionaries of China held at Shanghai May 10th to 24th 1877 he presented this work which was then published in a revised edition in 1878. There exist images of the Members of the Missionary Conference in two group photographs those engaged in Mission work for over ten years and those engaged in Mission work for under ten years which is reproduced in 'History of Photography in China Western Photographers 1861-1879' by Terry Bennett Quaritch 2010 on page 135 the Reverend Yates is not present but his wife is. . First Hurst edition of this well-written memoir first published in 1869 by Robert Carter detailing her life as a Presbyterian missionary to China with husband John Nevius 1829-1893 after first sailing for China in March 1853 arriving in Ningbo Hangzhou Yantai then Chefoo in China’s Shandong Province. The couple’s efforts included diligently learning the Chinese language setting up schools for Chinese women and young female children coping with Cholera outbreaks warlords bandits and setting up schools. One particular section of the memoir focuses on preparing tea and tea leaves for market and how the varieties were determined as well as traveling up the Yangtze River. Despite her frequent illnesses Helen Nevius 1833-1910 devoted considerable time and support into her husband John’s development of the “Nevius Method†of missionary efforts in China whihc emphasized personal evangelism Bible centric instruction self-propagation and self-government encouraging local fundraising church and mission building and cooperation with other missionaries along with continually building and expanding schools which received partial subsidies. They were frequently apart for extended periods due to her frequent poor health and over 40 years returning to the U.S. from China due to incapacity and overwork. NOTE: the first half of this volume was used as a scrapbook and has at least 32 engravings of scenes military men and literary person glued to the pages not affecting the map which is bound in place. <br/><br/>This map is a variant of the original map which appeared in the third volume of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. That map measures 14 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches and has titles in Chinese ideograms and in English. THIS MAP has names in English or the English equivalent of the Chinese identifications. This map accompanies an article "MIscellany" with sub-title " Canton and the River Tigris " another section of which is "The Physical and Moral evils inflicted on the Chinese by a Christian people for the love of gain". More of the entry discusses at length the problems of opium as previously described in the Calcutta Christian Observer with supporting remarks. Rev. Bridgman was the editor of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. He was the first American Protestant Christian missionary sent to China and America's first Sinologist. NOTE: This volume also includes missionary reports by Rev.
