8vo; Toronto : University of Toronto. 1966.Cloth. Small 4to. Viii, 211, 186, 228 pages. Illustrated. Second edition. The present edition of this book is reproduced almost exactly as the original, with the three parts bound into one volume, and with the important addition of an essay on a Chinese illuminated scroll of Esther by the noted Judaic scholar, Cecil Roth. The new edition also includes an updated bibliography and a list of minor corrections. First published in three parts in 1942 by the University of Toronto Press. SUBJECT(S): Jews China Kaifeng Xian. CONTENTS: Historical; Inscriptional; Genealogical. The first evidence of Jews in China dates from the early eighth century. Later, Jews came by way of Mid Eastern trade route, and the first permanent Jewish settlement in China, whose descendants are still present in K'ai Feng, was in the ninth of tenth century. Their numbers grew large enough to be noticed by the central government in the mid 1300s. After the first early settlers, though, no new Jewish communities were created in China until the 1800s; consequently, the K'ai Feng Jews were diluted through, intermarriage with the Chinese, both in religion and ethnicity over the centuries. 126 pages. "Recounts the step-by-step infiltration of Communism in China until the time was ripe for the final take-over by force. A story not of a benign agrarian revolution but of the unfolding of a ruthless plot strikingly similar to the Red conquest of other lands that have gone behind the Iron Curtain. The author writes with a sense of urgency in the belief that complacency and lack of wide-spread appreciation as to Communist technique are still handicapping the West in meeting the threat of International Communism both at home and abroad." - from front flap. Author was in charge of the hospital in Chungking for over twenty years. Prior owner's name atop title page else unmarked. Average wear. Book
