8vo, hardcover. This book analyzes the role of oral stories in Chinese witch-hunts. Successive chapters deal with the implications of Chinese versions of the Little Red Riding Hood story; the use of parts of the adult human body, children and foetuses, to draw out their life-force; attacks by mysterious creatures, causing open wounds, suffocation, the loss of hair and the like; the presence of a Drought Demon in the corpses of recently deceased women; and finally the emperor forcibly recruiting unmarried women for his harem. Of interest to historians and anthropologists working on oral traditions, folklore and witch-hunts (also from a comparative perspective), but also to those working on anti-Christian movements and the intersection of popular fears and political history in China. About the Author: Barend J. ter Haar, Doctorate (1990) in the Humanities, Leiden University, is Professor of Chinese History at Leiden. He published on Chinese temple cults, lay religious movements, violence, minorities, including The Ritual and Mythology of the Chinese Triads: Creating an Identity (Brill, 1998).

"Atkinson's original objective in undertaking these travels was to sketch the scenery of Siberia. He traveled on a czar's pass out of Russia's Asiatic dominions from Kokhan on the west to the eastern end of the Baikal and as far south as the Chinese town of Tchin-si; and into the immense Syan-shan chain, never before seen by any European and a great portion of the western part of the Gobi. He crossed over 39,500 miles in 7 years penetrating into areas most probably never seen by a white man. He suffered significantly, from hunger and thirst and was placed in critical situations amongst Central Asian tribes and among escaped Chinese prisoners. Atkinson produce at least 560 sketches of the scenery, executed in colours. A number are exquisitely produced in this volume and in lithographed colours as well. His book has over the years become known as one of the greatest accounts of European travel into Central and Eastern Asia".

Between October 1896 and June 1897, members of the Blackburn Commission travelled some 4,300 miles through the interior of south and central China. They collected detailed information on all factors relating to how the Chinese met "their own wants in the matter of textiles", including material on marketing, distribution, indigenous handicraft production, taxation and "local customs and usage as they might affect [the United Kingdom's] textile industry". The Commission also investigated in detail remote or less known parts of the country, and provided an account of means of communication by land and water. The report was published in two lengthy sections by The North-East Lancashire Press Company in Blackburn, a very rare imprint. The first part was compiled by Bourne; the second by H. Neville and H. Bell. See further: "Commerce and Capitalism in Chinese Societies", Gary G. Hamilton (London, Routledge, 2006). Bourne published also, among others, "The Lo-Fou mountains: An excursion" (Hongkong, 1895); and "Trade of central and southern China" (Shanghai, 1898).

(Cordier, 'Bibliotheca Sinica', p. 69. France littéraire, XI, p. 101 'The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature', p. 88.). First edition, Good copy.
