He served as a missionary for some years in China and returned to organize missionary activity in the Far East. This account of his travels makes interesting reading. He visited and describes many places customs sights religions. In China: Shanghai; Peking; Kiukiang; Foochow; Hong Kong; Canton - in Japan: Yokohama; Nagasaki; Tokio Tokyo; among other places.
