First edition of this well-illustrated work detailing the social and economic changes in China at the beginning of the 20th century against the backdrop of many foreign-educated students returning to China to set up new educational institutions the reforms to the opium trade encouraging of Western Medical practices and new sanitation and hygiene movements the rising opposition to slavery and concubines and more. Still there was tremendous unrest during this period with much of China subject to regional warlords fighting for power the May 4th movement in which Chinese students boycotted foreign goods and more.
