For the next eighteen years he held various posts in many parts of China, until December 1941 - while he was American Counsul at Shanghai - when the Japanese captured the city and he was interned for several months. Named Consul General at Vancouver in 1945, he left the next year to become Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, later American Ambassador to Thailand, a post he held until his retirement in 1953....
