1953List2954Tokyo Japan 1953. Cardboard binder containing thirty-six 8 ¼ x 11 ½ inch sheets; sixteen pages mimeographed and twenty with photos 4 ½ x 6 ½ inches and smaller. Photos near fine with fine contrast; pages folded with some marginal damage; overall excellent. Tokyo Keiki Seizosho was established in 1896 and manufactured measuring devices. It soon began to manufacture navigation equipment particularly compasses. Following World War II it also began working in radar and hydraulics. Offered here is a 1953 report on the company’s activities especially its aircraft instrument manufacturing. The report also discusses the re-establishment of relationships with American companies including Sperry Gyroscope Company Bendix Aviation Corporation and Walter Kidde. The report includes twenty photographs including exterior views of the plant its shops and equipment testing. unknown

With 70 tipped in original polaroid snap shots color photographs and color postcards each with descriptive typed captions below. Numerous images of Hong Kong. The album opens with a photograph of the airplane: B.O.A.C. jet from San Francisco to Tokyo; many pictures of shrines; Buddha of Kamakura; Fuji - Hakone - Izu National Park; Mt. Fuji; Kyoto; fields of tea; Taipei; Tiger Balm Garden; Victoria Peak; Hong Kong Harbor; and Aberdeen. Japan: 6 commercial 27 Polaroid mostly Kyoto; Taipei: 5 b&w 8 Polaroid; Hong Kong: 18 Polaroid 6 postcards. Three annotated manuscripts pertaining to major changes in Japanese society following the Meiji restoration and the embrace of western ideas and products in a period when the government was committed to learning from the West. <br /> <br /> Two of the manuscripts have a distinct post war perspective of coming to terms with the need to strengthen food supply independence with one of the documents comparing the amounts of cereals comestibles & beverages imported before 1892-1893 and after 1897-1898 the China Japan war and imported before 1903 and after 1906 the Russo-Japanese war see No. 1 below. The other manuscript makes a post war reference to the fact that T. Kameya's grocery business actually benefited from the last two wars: "the two wars . have actually given a given a great impetus to the food and drink stuff business" see No. 2 below.<br /> <br /> Includes the following manuscripts all annotated in pencil by an editor more fluent in English than the original author. By association with another manuscript the author of these manuscripts is possibly Kahe Otani President of the Yokohama Chamber of Commerce who is recorded Annual Report of the Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco 1900 as making a speech at the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco on the subject of Japan - US trade relations.<br /> <br /> 1. "Food Supply in Japan" letter or address 3pp which discusses the Japanese climate and the introduction of foreign clothing and food "What will be the effect of the change of food-taking diet comprising both animal food as well as vegetables and fish upon the Japanese people both mentally and physically is a problem worthy of investigation". Also discusses the cultivation of land list of imports of cereals comestibles and beverages for 1892 - 1906; items imported for the fiscal year 1909; the demand for beef and the cultivation of rice in the southern US "the time will not be far distant when we shall be able to get a cheaper supply of our staple food from the other side of the earth". Typed/mimeographed 8 1/2 x 11".<br /> <br /> 2. T. Kameya & Co. Tokyo letterhead typed letter 2pp concerning Japanese history in the new Meiji Era the founding of the foreign wine and grocery company by Mr. Kameya the advent of business with Europe and the US the construction of the shop on Ginza Street and a list of US and European companies represented in Japan by T. Kameya. The early part of this letter describes the initial resistance of people to the "sudden influx of western civilization: "The samurai class was still reluctant to obey the law prohibiting them to carry swords on their waist as they used to do; while the general people were obstinate enough to wear top-knots on their heads. In short they had a great dislike nay an undescribable sic hate for anything foreign or "savage" as they used to call it". Typed/mimeographed 9 x 11 1/2".<br /> <br /> 3. "Tokyo Produce Exchange" handwritten letter 3pp discusses the produce exchange primarily rice in Tokyo the history of the exchange referring to events in the second 16th 20th and 41st "year of Meiji" and its products including corn silk threads salt artificial manure cotton cotton yarn cotton thread etc. Records the capital on hand at various times in the exchange's history. Illustrated with 56 Literati Paintings mounted on 25 double-sided accordion-fold boards some with woodblock colour some finished in colour by hand the illustrations mounted with gilt-speckled borders. Oblong folio the album 28 3/4 x 17 1/2 cm. the paintings 22 x 13 1/2 cm. the upper cover of the album with original padded silk brocade and paper label. The album includes 7 'Poetry Competition paintings and poems from the '100 Famous Poems' an 8th century Heian period compilation. A very pleasing example well preserved with minor rubbing to the extremities the mountings and illustrations all in fine condition. A FINE EXAMPLE. THE JAPANESE ART OF BUNJIN-GA WAS INTRODUCED IN THE 17TH CENTURY FROM CHINA'S SOUTHERN SCHOOL OF PAINTING. This occurred during the Ming dynasty through the 'Painting Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden' although that in itself was based on Song and Yuan dynasty landscape painting; and the poetry of the Japanese literati painting was in the style of Classical Chinese poetry termed Kanbun in Japan.<br> Literati painting in Japan is generally referred to as Bunjinga literati painting; Ch. Wen ren hua or Nanga Southern School painting; Ch. nan zong hua both terms borrowed from China. Wen ren hua refers to the status of artists who belonged to the scholar-gentleman class. Nan zong hua was coined by the Chinese painter and theorist Dong Qichang b. 1555–d. 1636 who used it to describe art by literati ostensibly amateurs whose paintings were indebted to their mastery of calligraphy expressed their inner feelings and sought to capture the spiritual essence of their subjects. A photostat of a Japanese military map known as a gaihozu or "maps of outer lands" likely captured by American forces and stamped at the lower right "Geographic Branch Military Intelligence Division Received Aug 6 -1935". <br /> <br /> The map shows Manchukuo Manchuria a puppet state of Japan's in northeast China 1932 - 1945. In the Mukden Incident the Japanese deliberately bombed their own railway in China the South Manchuria Railway blaming it on the Chinese and using it as a pretext to take over Manchuria and rename it Manchukuo.<br /> <br /> At the upper right can be seen an area designated "Jewish auto. province"; this is an area which exists today known as the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. It is a federal subject of Russia to the far east bordering China. Stalin sent Jews to this remote area starting in the late 1920s in a plan to develop an autonomous nation for Russian Jews. <br /> <br /> Around 1870 the Japanese military began making maps of neighboring countries or gaihozu. At first they copied maps obtained from those countries or from the West. The place names on this map are printed in English. The map shows railways air routes steamer routes rivers wadis deserts marshes "the Great Walls" roads mines telegraph stations harbours aerodromes principal cities & towns Japanese embassies & consulates and "foreign public offices". Four insets include a General Map of Eastern Asia Fengtien Harbin and Hsinking. <br /> <br /> Stamp at lower left "General Staff Map Collection File Copy Do not mark or mutilate". 1911160221911. A four page hand written letter on textured paper bamboo like surface with a color image titled "View of Miyajima Aki" dated August 5 1911. Describing a trip from Yokohama to Kobe with many details on life in Japan at the time including descriptions of Mt. Fujiyama the construction of native boats with wooden pegs the taking on of the crew of the Empress "which was wrecked about a week ago". Also a description of Kobe's mountains falls and food. With an illustration of the famous Itsukushima shrine's red entrance gate or torii built over the water. This shrine has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is dedicated to the three daughters of the Shinto deity of seas and storms. Folded 4 3/4 x 7". Very good. HK580. unknown

A leporello of 24 albumen paper photographs each approximately 90 × 140 mm mounted on both sides of card leaves bound in brocade-covered thick bevel-edged boards 120 × 180 mm. Brocade lightly worn at some corners; leaves slightly cockled; minor silverfish damage to the surface of the pastedowns and the two adjacent pages affecting the top portion of the two photographs mounted on them; for the rest the condition is excellent. The images include views of villages towns and shrines with occasional mountain scenes Mount Fuji makes a cameo appearance. Only one image is captioned in the negative 'Temple at illegible'. We have handled hand-coloured examples of albums of this nature and we have to say these uncoloured plates are much to be preferred. Unknown Publisher unknown

One page report initially published in the New York Tribune supporting the return or cessation of the indemnities being paid by Japan: "the return of this indemnity would be highly honorable to the United States and advantageous to both countries. The Japanese people justly regard their indemnity as an extortion. . No nation ever more needed or merited the sympathy and encouragement of the world than Japan in the present crisis of her affairs." Japan's infrastructure improvements and moral & intellectual advancement are cited. The indemnities were payments forced upon the two nations in so-called unequal treaties which were imposed by western nations during the 19th and early 20th centuries on Qing Dynasty China and late Tokugawa Japan. They established reparations payable following military defeat by western nations. Short split to outer edge of horizontal fold o/w very good. 6 x 10" unknown

Overall a beautiful example uncommon in such nice condition. Oblong Folio 14" x 10-1/2" with a black morocco leather spine with gilt designs and exquisite black enamel painted and onlaid covers. Containing 50 hand-colored 10-1/4" x 7-3/4" albumen photographs laid down onto heavy cardboard pages titled in the negative in English and with small color drawings of figures in the margins of each page. Images include cityscapes landmarks and scenes of daily life and rituals in mid-to-late Meiji period Japan. Places shown include Tokyo Kyoto Yokohama Nagoya Enoshima the shrines of Nikko and two views of Mt. Fuji. Occupational scenes include women spinning cotton men striking wheat a rice plantation men transporting rice bales on horseback a samurai a Shinto priest Shinto pilgrims a "blind shampooer" a pottery shop a shoe shop a grocery a cloth store "reading at home" "gathering the cocoons" "playing at ball" and more. Albums such as this were sold to overseas visitors to Japan ca 1880s- early 1900s who would choose their favorite scenes from the photography studio's stock and whether to pay extra for hand-coloring fine binding and artistic covers. We have offered a handful of examples over the years and this is easily the finest in content with more occupational and daily life scenes as opposed to the standard landmarks as well as special touches such as the small hand-painted characters in the margins of each page and also in the finest condition. Housed in a clamshell box with decorative cloth covers and likely the original tin container used for shipment to America. <br/><br/> hardcover

Cardboard pages in album have a slight wave; prints have light toning along edges and light silvering a few prints with light soiling and foxing affecting content; all prints have good exposure. Heavy fraying and wear to covers spine dry with moderate chipping and a tear along one edge. Covers Fair but overall the photographs themselves are Very Good. Oblong Folio 13-1/2" x 10-1/2" in worn decorative cloth over heavy wooden boards and leather spine with tissue guards for the photos. A personalized travel album from 19th century Japan with 50 hand-colored 10" x 7-5/8" albumen photographs laid down onto heavy cardboard pages with titles in the negative and occasionally in manuscript below the image all in English. This was the album of Frank Leslie Coombs 1853-1934 who was a United States Minister ambassador to Japan from June 1892 to August 1893. Most images found within this album depict peaceful scenes of landscapes temples tea houses and roads. Five images however illustrate the aftermath of the Mino-Owari earthquake also known as the Great Earthquake of 1891. With a magnitude of 8.0 this quake left significant damage some of it recorded here. Images include views of twisted bridges crumpled buildings and the town of Osaka burned to the ground. <br/><br/> hardcover
