First facsimile edition 1 of 200 copies of this scarce reprint of the 1907 Meiji-era original first printed by Yoshikawa Hanschichi. Asai and his close friend the poet Ikebe Toen 1864-1923 conceived and executed tthis set of a Meiji audience by critiquing the tension between the modernizing Japan at the beginning of the 20th Century with traditional Japanese culture and individuals facing off with each other against the Westernization of Japan. These are considered Asai Chu’s best-known printed work and they imitated the popular satirical and comic magazines of the age in Europe. Complete original sets are scarce and Unsodo produced this splendid recreation of the work nicely coloured by Saburo and with extended commentary in Japanese. 110834Maps of the four main islands of Japan and the Korean Peninsula are surrounded by borders of cherry blossom and bamboo with scenes of Mt Fuji a pagoda and birds on the wing. Major cities are shown on the maps; Korea has Pyongyang Seoul and Pusan with '38° LINE' in a much larger font across the centre. The album 275 × 390 mm contains three series of commercially produced small photographic views loosely inserted behind photo-corners 40 hand-coloured views of Japan; 56 black and white views of Tokyo; and 40 black and white views of the Kure-Hiro district as well as 11 larger personal photographs of Bangkok. The last three items in the album are more significant: they are professionally produced photographs of two destroyers of the RAN - HMAS 'Anzac' D59 and HMAS 'Warramunga' D123 - and a large group portrait of three officers and twelve sailors of the 'Warramunga'. Both these ships served in the Korean War. The album and its contents appear to have been purchased by one of the crew members of the 'Warramunga' after she became one of the first Australian warships assigned to the Far East Strategic Reserve in 1955. unknown

Very good copies with slight curl; some with small edge or corner tears; 23 have the name of the film or featured actors/actresses rubber-stamped on the back in Japanese. 47 b/w photos. Approximately 6 x 4 inches. One duplicate. Most are group scenes from dramas a few portraits a few without characters; subject matter ranges from early historical dramas to contemporary scenes to the war and its effects. The dates have been verified on a few and all fall during the years of the Pacific War including Tadashi Imai's Tanjiko-mura 1940 "Hanagoyomi hasshojin" 1940 based on the 19th century novel "Josei hongan" 1940 made in the same year as the novel by Kan Kikuchi Yasuki Chiba's "Kuso buraku" 1939. The balance of the stills appear to date within approximately the same period. unknown

Title leaf plus 18 leaves illustrated with forty-three large photographs between 4 x 6 and 8 x 10 inches including a few small panoramic images most with typed captions mounted beneath the pictures. Oblong folio. Contemporary light brown leather. Minor scuffing and edge wear. A unique photograph album created for an American businessman named Richard F. Quandt "In Remembrance of Your Visit to Chiba Iron and Steel Works on May 14 1957" according to the printed dedication on the title leaf. The printed message is signed by the founder of Kawasaki Steel Yataro Nishiyama. The album is populated by over forty photographs featuring the construction and operation of Kawasaki Steel's new integrated steel mill in Chiba City Japan. The photographs picture the staff of Chiba Works a schematic of the plant aerial views of the plant images of the blast furnace coke oven ore yard and other exteriors. Some of the exterior shots include small panoramas of the plant's construction most notably a three-panel panorama showing the "Entire View of Hot & Cold Strip Mill Plant's Construction Work." The interior photographs document the heat control center open heart furnaces soaking pits and several candid shots of Mr. Quandt touring the plant with the managers of Kawasaki Steel.<br /> <br /> According to his 1974 obituary in The New York Times Richard Frederick Quandt was a Hungarian-born businessman who emigrated to the United States after World War II. He first worked for the Hambro Trading Company in 1949. At the time he visited the Chiba Iron and Steel Works he was serving as a loan officer for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development the lending arm of the World Bank. He was quite likely visiting the Chiba Works at the request of their principal Yataro Nishiyama in search of funding for the steel mill. Nishiyama was an engineer who built Kawasaki Steel into one of the most important steel manufacturing companies in Japan in the ensuing decades. A wonderful and informative photographic artifact of American economic diplomacy in postwar Japan. unknown
