With 25 silver gelatin photographs most sized 4.5 x 6 with a couple sized larger and couple sized less two w/ Nippon Dempo photographer’s stamps on versos all w/ numbering on verso 1 w/ extended manuscript notes in Japanese minor chipping to a few corners 1 w/ tears at fore-edges some toning to versos still a VG- set of images from the Nippu Jiji Newspaper in Honolulu HI. Scarce collection of original photographs of the great earthquake which leveled much of Tokyo and the port city of Yokohama with widespread damage in Chiba Kanagawa and Shizuoka. The 7.9 earthquake was one of the largest until the recent 9.0 struck Northeast Japan. Casualty estimates range from 100000 to 142000 much of them due to the resulting firestorms which swept the cities following the quake. These images show cracked roadways a ship deposited far inland alongside railroad tracks burned out buildings collapsed railroad bridges smoking ruins and buildings collapsed over onto automobiles and roadways. One image shows thousands refugees huddling with their possessions. The Nippon Dempo news agency and photographic service was founded originally in 1901 by Hoshiro Mitsunaga 1866-1945 after serving as a war correspondent and by his Dentsu company operated as both news agency and advertising company. Conjoined triptych of ink and watercolour woodblock prints trimmed to the margins together 35 x 63.3 cms backed onto Japanese scrap paper with some writing title and descriptive cartouches top right red censor's stamp lower left and artist's signature lower right some paper abrasions wear at the joins slight bleeding of ink and offsetting on the verso but overall in good condition. Vivid depiction of the Battle of Seonghwan also known as the battle of Asan in Korea July 29 1894 the first major land battle on of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895. Chinese troops are seen fleeing the charging Japanese marines and the silhouettes of airborn casualties are depicted in the bright orange explosion. <br> <br>Yōsai Nobukazu 1872-1944 was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Yōsai struggled and he survived as an artist by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Yōshū Chikanobu was his teacher active 1838-1912 and Yōsai Nobukazu was considered his best student. The majority of his prints were triptychs of battles of the Sino-Japanese war.
