A clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. Text in Japanese. Many color photos.
Ex-library book with the usual stamps, stickers, etc. Binding is tight and straight and text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Book has been re-bound by the library in to strong, heavy green cloth boards that show small tears at lower corners, but little else. Interior is very very clean and bright with very heavy paper with sharp corners. The forty 4-color full page plates illustrate approximately 600 examples of ornamental designs from Ancient Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Persia, Bokhara, Samarkand, Chinese Turkestan, Persia, India, Siam, China, Japan; and from those of the Tartars, the Siberian peoples, the Lapps, the Kirghiz, the Turcomans and the peoples of the Pamir plateau. These illustrations cover mainly the peak periods of non-European civilizations, so rich in decorative ornaments.
Book is in excellent condition. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears. 706 pages,

[Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world. A picture of this book is available upon req Taylor had first visited Japan as part of Perry's expedition of 1854. A good picture of life as it was with travels throughout the country including Yedo, Yokohama, an ascent of Fuji-Yama, Kamakura, Tokio (Tokyo), Echizen, etc and which includes Humbert's and Alcock's account of journeys from Nagasaki to Yedo. Very well illustrated.

Onoto Watanna, Winnifred Eaton (1875-1954) may have been the first Asian American woman to publish a novel. Although she was of Chinese-British ancestry, she published under the Japanese pseudonym, Onoto Watanna. She began writing stories at a very early age. She was only fourteen years old when one of her stories was accepted for publication by Montreal newspaper. Before long she had articles published in the United States in several popular magazines, notably the Ladies' Home Journal. Eventually, her compositions were accepted by the prestigious Saturday Evening Post as well as by other popular periodicals. She moved from this to writing novels, capitalizing on her mixed ancestry to pass herself off as a Japanese American by the name of "Onoto Watanna." Under this pseudonym she published Japanese romance novels and short stories, becoming widely read throughout the United States. A wonderful example of the American enthusiasm for all things Japanese around the turn of the century. NW60
