1939180510Japan. circa1939. 103 name or business cards mounted on 17 window-faced card leaves a little faded and a few tears in an album 26.2 x 18.3 cm; green linen boards gilt decorated spine a little chipped and rubbed but in remarkable original condition. An album of Japanese name cards collected in the late 1930s apparently by Bruce Rogers who held a post at the University of Oregon. The name cards which are organized roughly in alphabetical order in a purpose-made album offer a fascinating insight into the network of contacts of a western resident in prewar Japan. They include cards presented to Rogers by journalists academics businesspeople diplomats and others. Though quite a number of his contacts are Americans or other foreigners the majority are Japanese. There are three cards from George Albert Makinson 1886-1972 and his wife presented at the time when Makinson was US Consul General in Osaka a post he took up in1938 and a card presented by Parliamentary Lower House member Honda Yoshinari 1871-1952. Some of the cards include inscriptions thanking Rogers for hospitality and one particularly interesting one is inscribed with a message of introduction from a Japanese acquaintance asking for Rogers to be allowed to be present during an air-raid drill in Tokyo an omen of the approaching war. . hardcover
1419215666東京. Tokyo.: 槙写真館. Maki Shashinkan. Taisho 14 1925. Black and white photographic illustrations bird's-eye view map 37pp of photographic plates with tissue guards some captioned 4 pages list the names of graduates 26.5 x 37.5cm. All edges gilt cloth covered boards trifle marked tassel ties. First tissue guard a little creased others very lightly foxed in places a very good copy. This photographic album published in 1925 commemorates the graduating students of Tokyo University of Business the forerunner of today's Hitotsubashi University. Founded in 1874 the school became a university in 1920 making these students part of the very first graduating class. The university was famous particularly for training many of Japan's leading economists and business people.

The album opens with a photograph of the main gate and a bird's-eye view map of the campus. The university's campus in central Tokyo was largely destroyed during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. A stark reminder of the university's resilience is a photograph depicting a damaged university hall its roof missing following the earthquake. This album was produced just before the university moved to its new campus in the recently created "garden city" of Kunitachi on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Beyond these historical glimpses the album offers a fascinating look into various aspects of student life during this period. Photographs showcase faculty members including the notable Minobe Tatsukichi a constitutional law professor whose theory of the Emperor as an organ in the government 天皇機関説 Tenno kikansetsu became a focus of political controversy in the late 1930s. Students are depicted in different groups including seminar groups with their supervisors and sporting clubs. As well as more formal photos of class groups there are also shots of students relaxing in the cafeteria studying notices on the university noticeboard where examonation results were also posted taking part in a skiing excursion and participating in other sports including kendo rowing and horse-riding. One page features the covers of magazines published by the universityThe university song complete with its musical score is also included.

The final four pages of the album list the graduates' names and addresses serving as a lasting record of this significant moment in their academic journey. The album provides a vivid and valuable depiction of Japanese university life in the mid-1920s. . 槙写真館. [Maki Shashinkan]. hardcover

1908178293東京. Tokyo.: 東陽堂. Tōyōdō. Meiji 41 1908. Four double page colour plates a double page and a full page illustration in green ink black and white photographic illustrations. 25.5 x 18.5cm illustrations 23pp text: 50 13 36pp captions and text in Japanese and English. Original colour illustrated wrappers. Text evenly browned upper wrapper and first leaves a little insect damaged but still a very attractive souvenir issue. This fascinating magazine special issue was published to commemorate the Atlantic Fleet's the Great White Fleet visit to Japan in October 1908. The issue was published in November 1908 and reports all the activities of welcoming the fleet in Yokohama. Fuzoku Gaho was the first illustrated magazine which covered Japanese culture and was published between between 1889 and 1916. This special issue shows the enthusiasm Japanese government and the public displayed to the visiting US naval officers and sailors.

The US Atlantic Fleet which consisted with 16 war ships went around the world between 1908 and 1909. As the ships were painted in white the fleet was also known as the Great White Fleet. In Japan they were called white ships 白船 in contrast to the black ships of Matthew Perry. This US naval exercise was to show off the American naval power to the world particularly in the Pacific after the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese government decided to invite the fleet to Japan and welcome the ships with heightened enthusiasm. The contemporary social atmosphere and details of numerous events are covered extensively in this issue. Text is both in Japanese and English. The issue includes some pages of cartoon illustrations of American sailors on shore leave in Yokohama. With a title of "Jackass in Yokohama" and "U.S Jackies on the Spree" the sailors' experiences in Yokohama are illustrated with humour. . 東陽堂. [Tōyōdō]. unknown

There are two islands each where they are safely protected from their enemies. The first view is of the Bund of Oura - the waterfront where westerners were allowed with Sampans in the water. The Second view is "Oni no Jere" The Temple of Devils on a hillside. Both cards are in Very Good condition with some beginning tidemarking / foxing to the edges. "A series of encounters between the West and Japan in the 1850s ended Japan's isolationist trade policies. In particular the treaty with Russia signed on February 7 1855 established Nagasaki as an open port and further granted extraterritoriality privileges to foreigners living in Japan. These encounters finally culminated in 1859 when the Ansei Treaties and in particular the Harris Treaty with the United States took effect. These treaties demanded immediate opening of ports and also established generally unequal trade relationships between the Western powers and Japan. In 1860 development of the area around Oura Creek began; by August 15 1862 Japanese officials ordered foreign residents of Nagasaki into this new settlement area." . No Publisher Listed. unknown
