New English Original bdg. HC. Folio. (34 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 496 p., color and b/w ills. After the death of Emperor Theodosius I in 395, the vast Roman lands stretching from the shores of the English Channel to the borders of Iran were divided into two realms, western and eastern. Although the western part of the empire faded away in the second half of the 5th century, the Roman Empire continued to exist in its eastern territories until 1453. The name "Byzantine" was used for the first time by the German humanist and philologist Hieronymus Wolf in the 16th century for this empire, whose capital was moved from Rome to the city of Byzantion (with its new name, Constantinople) and became Christian over time. This term became widespread in the 19th century and later. However, the people that this book is about have always called themselves "Roman" and their state the "Roman Empire", while their neighbors also knew them as "Romans". The Byzantine Empire that ruled for about 11 centuries is one of the states whose reign lasted the longest in Anatolia. Anatolia was the geographical, demographic, and economic cradle of this predominantly Greek-speaking Christian population and its culture. The loss of Anatolia as of the 14th century led to the end of the empire in a short time. The cry of Emperor Theodore II Laskaris - "Holy land, my mother, Anatolia!" - in one of his letters from the mid-13th century shows how vital these lands were for the empire. This book aims to present both Byzantine culture and, more specifically, Byzantine Anatolia, through 32 articles by Turkish and foreign Byzantologists, who are experts in their respective fields. While the articles on political, bureaucratic, military, economic and religious life focus on the state apparatus and social structure, articles on literature, health, art, and material culture remains provide valuable information about daily life. In the articles that constitute the last part of the book, the reader is invited to a historical journey through different geographical regions of Byzantine Anatolia.

Vol 1: This first volume of the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey places her among the countries of the Mediterranean world and Western Europe publishing systematically the mosaic wealth in their own lands. The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia. The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey, Istanbul, in 2004. The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques. Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity. This volume with its publication and research quality is a strong start for the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey. This also means that a high standard is already established for the future monographs. Vol. 2: The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. This new volume broadens the documentation and appreciation of mosaic art in that city. Future monographs in the same series will turn to other archaeological sites in Turkey, whose vast mosaic treasures are gradually receiving the scholarly attention they deserve. This entire project originated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at the American Research Institute in Turkey at Istanbul in 2004. In this work, Anne-Marie Manière-Lévêque, a very experienced member of the French team that has been excavating at Xanthos for many years, carefully records and interprets mosaic pavements from the western part of Xanthos, which includes buildings with mosaic decoration on the Lycian Acropolis and in the "Roman" Agora. The pavements ornamented both domestic and religious structures, and they include several fine figural carpets in addition to geometric floors. The pavement techniques consist of both opus tessellatum and opus sectile, and chronologically they cover the late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. These floors complement the fine assortment of pavements found in the East Basilica inventoried in the first Xanthos volume. In both its text and rich illustration, the present work maintains the high standard of scholarship employed in the earlier volume, and all of this is underscored by the author's deep familiarity with the archaeological exploration of Xanthos. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey.

Jewel and jewellery culture in Anatolia throughout history.= Tarih boyunca Anadolu'da taki ve kuyumculuk kültürü. It is observed that, along history, cultures and levels of development of societes have reflected on the jewellery pieces, accessories and designs that were used. For that reason, we believe that examining the historical development of jewellery business and jewellery design on this piece of land will give us an idea about our past, judgement values and the utilization process of gold and silver as well as it will shed on the light on the future of the society and the sector and add value to it. In this period where ccorporate social responsibility is as important as the corporate identities of companies, to be involved in this publications, second of which has been prepared by IKO, since the very beginning has become o part of the mission of Lidya (Lidia) jewellery which has taken its name from Anatolian history. We believe that sharing information will unite our sector on a common ground and make us stronger and will be able to form the concept of 'Golden Furute'.
