Very Good French Original wrappers. Folio. (32 x 21 cm). bilingual in English and French. [8], 26, [2] p. First printed edition of these minutes by the Foreign Ministry of France in 1897-1898 on Bahr Al-Ghazal, Lake Chad, and the Upper Nile regions. The tensions between French and British relations were high in the 1875-1898 era. especially over Egyptian and African issues. At several points, these issues brought the two nations to the brink of war; but the situation was always defused diplomatically. For two decades, there was peace-but it was "an armed peace, characterized by alarms, distrust, rancor, and irritation." During the Scramble for Africa in the 1880s, the British and French generally recognized each other's spheres of influence. In an agreement in 1890, Great Britain was recognized in Bahr-el-Ghazal and Darfur, while Wadai, Bagirmi, Kanem, and the territory to the north and east of Lake Chad were assigned to France. The Suez Canal, initially built by the French, became a joint British-French project in 1875, as both saw it as vital to maintaining their influence and empires in Asia. In 1882, ongoing civil disturbances in Egypt (see Urabi Revolt) prompted Britain to intervene, extending a hand to France. France's expansionist Prime Minister Jules Ferry was out of office, and the government was unwilling to send more than an intimidating fleet to the region. Britain established a protectorate, as France had a year earlier in Tunisia, and popular opinion in France later put this action down to duplicity. It was at this time that the two nations established co-ownership of Vanuatu. The Anglo-French Convention of 1882 was also signed to resolve territory disagreements in western Africa. One brief but dangerous dispute occurred during the Fashoda Incident in 1898 when French troops tried to claim an area in the Southern Sudan, and a British force purporting to be acting in the interests of the Khedive of Egypt arrived. Under heavy pressure, the French withdrew and Britain took control over the area, As France recognized British control of Sudan. France received control of the small kingdom of Wadai, Which consolidated its holdings in northwest Africa. France had failed in its main goals. Fashoda was a diplomatic victory for the British because the French realized that in the long run, they needed friendship with Britain in case of a war between France and Germany. (Wikipedia).
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (33 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. 552 p., color and b/w ills. Since the establishment of the Attalid dynasty in the 3rd century bc the ancient city of Pergamon had been the capital and royal residence of the Attalid kingdom as well as a more or less independent Hellenistic polis with all its civic institutions. Consequently this book concentrates above all on Pergamon as a city and a royal capital, on its inhabitants and its sacred spaces, which feature so prominently in the urban fabric and include the Sanctuary of Athena, the Great Altar, the Asklepieion and the Red Hall (or Red Basilica). Although the chronological focus lies on the Hellenistic epoch, the articles in this volume cover a span from prehistory to the Byzantine period, as is essential if one is to understand the prerequisites for the city's development within its landscape, and also to appreciate how the legacy of Hellenism was handed down, changed, enriched and also destroyed in subsequent periods.

"In addition to the Hittite capital Hattusa the book includes detailed study, pictures and plans of some other sites like Yazilikaya, Alaca Höyük, Kanes/Nesa (Kültepe) and Sarissa(Kusakli Höyük). The Neo-Hittite sites like Karkamis, Azatiwataya or Yesemek and some rarely-visited Hittite reliefs are also included. Sometime in the 1650s BC, a noble clan, who would in our time be named Hittites, making Hattusa its capital, brought together the small independent Anatolian city kingdoms. In a short period and for the first time in the history of the peninsula, it became a kingdom strong enough to challenge the other world kingdoms of the Late Bronze Age, namely Mycenaeans, Egypt, Mitanni/Hanigalbat, Babylonia and the later Assyria. The difficulty of bringing together so many principalities of different size, ethnicity and language under the same flag and competing with well-established sophisticated cultures of the time is evident in the Hittite history and culture. Centred in the large curve of the Halys, which they called the Marasantiya, they had loose frontiers, their longest extending from the Aegean to the other side of the Euphrates (Hittite Mala) and from the Pontic Mountains to the Mediterranean and the source of the Orontes River. The rock-reliefs, which are still spread all around the country, show the routes by which their armies campaigned. The artifacts of their unsophisticated material culture are among the most interesting items of many museums. In Turkey, even if the traveller may not have the chance to visit their capital Hattusa, the name of the Hittites greets him at every turn.". The Lycian Civilization is the product of an ancient Anatolian people known as the Lukka. The traces of this people, who spoke a language related to Luwian, have now been dated as far back as the prehistoric period by recent research, which constitutes another important step towards understanding the history of Anatolia. The Lukka people fought with the Hittites against Ramses II in the Battle of Qade¿, while the Lycians became the symbol of the Anatolian peoples when, led by Sarpedon, they came to the aid of the Trojans in the epic poem The Iliad and thus left their mark on history. With its uniquely distinctive culture, Lycia is one of the best known and investigated regions of Anatolia. Roughly coinciding with today¿s Teke Peninsula, this rugged geography isolated Lycia from the surrounding cultural zones, thus allowing it to compile an impressive cultural inventory of its own. The book you are holding in your hands attempts to introduce this extraordinary civilization to the reader through the latest findings and scientific approach by the experts in the field.

Midas'in ülkesinde, anitlarin gölgesinde. [with CD]. "A large majority of the present population of the Central Anatolian Region lives in rural areas. They live on agriculture and animal husbandry. The destiny of the large part of the population of the region has remained unchanged. Central Anatolia with its wide agricultural fields is still the grain silo of the country. The geometric motifs particular to Phrygians on the Phrygian kilims called "tapetes," among the popular goods of the ancient world, still live on Sivrihisar kilims. Today, as in the past, the angora wool of Central Anatolia is still very valuable. Bronze bowls, used by the Phrygian elite as drinking vessels, have taken their place in our traditional baths as "naveled bath bowls." The music in the Phrygian mode that invoked ecstasy in religious rituals of the Mother Goddess Matar still lives in the Phrygian maqam, strained through the depths of ages. This shared destiny must be based on on a unison of ideas, beliefs and life, the roots of which go back to the Neolithic Age, mixed together through the ages in a melting pot.". S.
