New English Original bdg. HC. Folio. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 2 volumes set: (240 p.; 240 p.). "The book brings together over 250 different ancient roads, rock-cut passes, road inscriptions, milestones, bridges and ruts from Phrygia to the Euphrates, the Euphrates region and beyond, and the Black Sea region. Anatolia entered into the historical era during the latter part of the Bronze Age, shortly before the foundation of the Hittite Kingdom. The pre-Hittite cuneiform tablets uncovered at Karum of Kanes (Kültepe) mention ass caravans moving back and forth between Mesopotamia and central Anatolia, a trip of some 1,000 km. Although these routes can tentatively be reconstructed there is no information about the roads. In a letter recovered from Kültepe, a merchant in tin asks his agent to divide the merchandise into small pieces, hide it into his clothes and bring it to town by the 'smugglers' track'; something usually done to avoid import taxes. His warning implies the existence of better roads than mountain tracks as early as the 1800s BC. For the journey between home and Anatolia the Assyrian merchants mostly employed asses or porters, and paved roads were not necessary. Thus the established caravan routes of the time, controlled by the local authority, were no more than roads in general sense. Still, the repeated use of the safest and easiest routes probably created more or less established caravan trails. The passes through high mountains and crossing points of the Euphrates were not many. Such sites were probably known and used by all the caravans.". Over 250 different ancient roads. Rock-cut passes. Road inscriptions. Milestones. Bridges. Ruts. Over 330 Colour Pictures. Volume 1 includes Western Anatolia from the Sea of Marmara to the Miditerranean / Southern Anatolia from Pamphylia to the Orontes. Volume 2 includes From Phrygia to the Euphrates / The Euphrates and beyond / Black Sea Region.

Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (43 x 31 cm). In English. 212 p. Color photos. The ancient city of Aphrodisias, which was the most renowned centre of sculpture for 600 years, had fallen into oblivion until being rediscovered and brought to public attention through photographs taken by the esteemed photographer Ara Guler. This event is without doubt foremost among Guler's countless contributions to awareness of Turkey throughout the world. In 1958 Ara Güler travelled to the town of Karacasu in Aydin province to photograph the Kemer Dam, and stumbled across Aphrodisias by accident after losing his way on the return journey from the dam. Photographs that he took during that first and several subsequent visits to Aphrodisias were published in many Turkish and foreign newspapers, periodicals and books, but until now have never been gathered together in a single publication. Call of Aphrodisias presents a large selection of these photographs. In publishing this collection of Ara Guler's photographs we wish to honour the memory of Prof. Kenan T. Erim, who from 1961 until his death in 1990 devoted himself to Aphrodisias to such a degree that his name came to be identified with the city; and Sevgi Gonul, who initiated the founding of the Geyre Foundation in 1987, but whose unexpected death in 2003 prevented her seeing the Sebasteion Sevgi Gonul Hall, one of the concrete results of her work on behalf of this spectacular ancient city.

The book titles 'Mosaics of Anatolia' is the variegated great adventure of the square that has existed on earth for thousand of years. At the same time, when each mosaic square is aligned next to each other they are like the sentences created by the words in a literary text: as an epic of the concept of depiction inspired by the myths of past civilisations. In this great adventure, the art of mosaics sometimes focused on the legends told by people, sometimes on daily life and sometimes on holy texts by tracking the past of nature at all times. A great journey in the infinity of colourful cubes. Therefore, the subjects of our book are the squares of both reknowned and unknown cultures who have settled in and emigrated from Anatolian lands. Like the diary of a traveler, we have withessed and catalogued the existence of the art of mosaics in every part of Anatolia. Each and every one of them is a meaningful visual feast telling the stories of settling and emigrating civilisations. ISBN: 9786055495107. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations History of art Mosaic.

New German Paperback. In special box. 4to. (30 x 22 cm). In Turkish. 2 volumes set: ([xxxvi], 556 p.; [6], 519, [1] p., 81 numerous b/w plates -Tafeln-). - The 2000 discovery of a treasure trove at Becin (by what today is Milas in southwest-Turkey) includes just under 50,000 Islamic and about 800 European coins in the greatest hoard that has ever been found in Turkey as part of regular archaeological excavation. It is at the same time also the largest Ottoman treasure of coins ever discovered. This volume presents the results of archaeological, historical, economic and numismatic analysis, which were developed by a Turkish and Austrian research team. The large number of Ottoman coins allows for an unprecedented understanding of the subtlety of Ottoman embossing in the late 16th and early 17th Centuries. On this basis the source value of the coin for Ottoman economic and administrative history will be revolutionized. Also, for the numismatic study of the Ottoman Empire's embossing of coins, this volume will be a pioneering work. German text. "It is generally accepted that debasement greatly contributed to the economic and conse-quently also social problems of the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th/early 17th century. The numismatic data derived from the Beçin coin hoard, closing under sultan Ahmed (1603-1617) greatly challenges this view. Metal analysis has shown that only the overall weights of the coins were reduced; the ?neness of silver remained unchanged at least until the 1610s.".
