New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 384 p., color and b/w ills. The famous aphorism of Hippocrates-'life is short, art long'-stands at the heart of this exhibition, which examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Roman times to the late Byzantine period. It traces the concurrent methods of healing-faith, magic, and rational medicine-from the foundations laid by Apollo and Asklepios, healers of antiquity, as well as Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the founders of rational medicine. The fascinating coexistence of a belief in demons as the primary cause of illness and a rational perception of disease, grounded in Hippocratic teachings, come together in the protagonists of the "art of healing"-the physicians, druggists, saints, holy men, and magicians who healed the sick. The daily rituals involved in maintaining and pursuing well-being, protecting against demons, purifying the body and soul offer a glimpse into the daily life of the Byzantines. The exhibition catalogue illustrates the influence of Byzantium's ancient cultural heritage on religious and rational thought as well as contemporary scientific developments and innovations from around the Mediterranean. The catalogue is one of the most updated and extensive publication on the history and art of healing in Byzantium with essays written by the acclaimed academics and with various works, some of them being published for the first time. New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (27 x 24 cm). Edition in Turkish. 408 p., color ills. Karsidan karsiya. MÖ 3. Bin'de Kiklad Adalari ve Bati Anadolu. [Exhibition catalogue]. 24 Mayis - 28 Agustos 2011. Sabanci University Sakip Sabanci Museum (SSM) hosted a very important exhibition under the main sponsorship of CIMSA. The exhibition, entitled "Across - The Cyclades and Western Anatolia During the 3rd Millennium BC" was composed of artifacts from various Turkish museums as well as the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the N P Goulandris Foundation Museum of Cycladic Art. The exhibition examined the relations between Anatolia, where the first steps towards civilization took place, and the nearby Cyclades Islands in the Aegean that gave rise to reciprocal influence that created two cultures which while similar in many respects, nonetheless maintained distinctive regional characteristics. The exhibition that also marked the first official cooperation between museums from Turkey and Greece was open to visit between 24th of May ¿ 28th of August 2011. A 14 meters long exact replica model of the Cycladic Ships, stood out as one of the most interesting pieces of the exhibition. The replica showed the impact of the Cycladic Ships on the interaction between the two cultures, as the ships were the only way of transportation between the two sides of the Aegean for a long time. The ships were built by Ankara University Research Center for Maritime Archaeology as a part of the "Cycladic Ships Revival Project" and without any binder materials or nails, by taking advantage of the swelling nature of the wood when goes into contact with water.

New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Edition in English. 269 p., ills. Alakent church: A Byzantine monument at Myra 12th-13th centuries. The presence of this small Byzantine church in the Alakent neighborhood of Demre has been known to archaeologists and art historians for quite some time. Revealing the structure from under the five meter deep alluvial fill in which it was buried was only possible as a result of the excavation work carried out in 2010 as part of the Myra-Andriake Excavations. The alluvial fill kept most of the aspects of the building such as mural paintings, roof tiles, facade decorations and spolia intact. The book was edited by the GABAM's director and member of Koç University Archaeology and Art History Department, Engin Akyürek. "The chapters of book are 'The Story of the Excavation' by Nevzat Çevik, the director of the Myra-Andriake Excavations, 'Myra: The Metropolis of Lycia', 'Alakent Church: Location And Architecture' and 'Conclusion' by Engin Akyürek, 'Architectural Sculpture' by Ayça Tiryaki, 'Wall Paintings' by Nilay Çoragan, 'Ceramic Finds' and 'Burials' by Özgü Çömezoglu Uzbek, 'Inscriptions' by Hüseyin Sami Öztürk and Christof Schuler, 'Conservation Treatments' by Sebahattin Küçük.".

An Austrian military engineer, Captain Ernst Krickl was a member of an Austrian archaeological expedition to Lycia in southwest Anatolia in 1892. Krickl made important contributions to this stage of Lycian research, drawing sketches of the monuments they encountered and plans of the ancient sites they visited, and taking photographs. 1892 Lycian Journal is Ernst Krickl's personal account of the expedition, illustrated with photographs. These three albums are here published in facsimile and English translation together with contemporary commentary on the expedition as described by Krickl. Reading Krickl's journal we accompany this young military engineer on a journey with some of the most eminent scholars of his time through a world that was completely strange to him and in many respects is strange to us in Turkey today, due to the radical changes that have taken place over the intervening century.
