Continuity and change: New approaches to legacy data in archaeology.= Süreklilik ve degisim: Miras veriye yeni yaklasimlar. Sempozyum bildirileri: Ankara, 29 Nisan 2016. Research on regional studies in archaeology has accelerated in the past 20 years and changed the archaeological discourse in a fundamental way. This recent perspective influenced the archaeological perception favorably in terms of evaluating the settlements with a holistic view, assessment of central places with their rural territories that cannot be separated from each other. The idea of organizing a symposium on this subject comes from our belief in the importance of removing ourselves of the understanding resulting from handling the settlement in Anatolian archeology for a long period of time, stripped from its dynamics and our belief in the importance of presenting new researches. Our department, Settlement Archaeology Program in METU was founded in 2000 mainly for filling the gap in Anatolian archaeology with the viewpoint of interdisciplinary studies and regional studies in archaeology. Studies at regional scale are recently integrated to archaeological projects in our country, yet produced important results. The main goal of this symposium is to provide a discussion ground for young scholars who carry out archaeological studies at regional scale and share various perspectives and results yielded by regional studies in Anatolia. Vol 1: This first volume of the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey places her among the countries of the Mediterranean world and Western Europe publishing systematically the mosaic wealth in their own lands. The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia. The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey, Istanbul, in 2004. The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques. Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity. This volume with its publication and research quality is a strong start for the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey. This also means that a high standard is already established for the future monographs. Vol. 2: The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. This new volume broadens the documentation and appreciation of mosaic art in that city. Future monographs in the same series will turn to other archaeological sites in Turkey, whose vast mosaic treasures are gradually receiving the scholarly attention they deserve. This entire project originated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at the American Research Institute in Turkey at Istanbul in 2004. In this work, Anne-Marie Manière-Lévêque, a very experienced member of the French team that has been excavating at Xanthos for many years, carefully records and interprets mosaic pavements from the western part of Xanthos, which includes buildings with mosaic decoration on the Lycian Acropolis and in the "Roman" Agora. The pavements ornamented both domestic and religious structures, and they include several fine figural carpets in addition to geometric floors. The pavement techniques consist of both opus tessellatum and opus sectile, and chronologically they cover the late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. These floors complement the fine assortment of pavements found in the East Basilica inventoried in the first Xanthos volume. In both its text and rich illustration, the present work maintains the high standard of scholarship employed in the earlier volume, and all of this is underscored by the author's deep familiarity with the archaeological exploration of Xanthos. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey.

Symposium Proceedings.= Orta Çag'da Anadolu'da kültürel karsilasmalar: 12-15. yüzyillarda Anadolu'da Italyanlar. Sempozyum bildirileri. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".

Study of Aydin's tangible cultural heritage takes its history as far back as the prehistoric period. Located on fertile land as well as on important thoroughfares and due to the city's commercial status, Aydin has repeatedly been devastated by wars waged by powers on quests to expand their own territories. In antiquity cities like Tralles and Aphrodisias made their mark with products such as pottery, sculpture and leather. Miletus harbour boosted the city's commerce and economy. Together with the photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu we travelled the length and breadth of Aydin for Cultural Heritage of Aydin, and esteemed experts in the field, academics and researchers, have contributed with their articles. Kenan Eren wrote about Aphrodisias, Volkmar Von Graeve-Hasibe Akat Islam about Miletus, Suat Ateslier about the other ancient cities, Murat Çekilmez about sculpture in and around Aydin and Mükerrem Kürüm about Aydin's architectural heritage. If we have succeeded in conveying the soul of the city of Aydin, which makes such an indelible impression with its sea, nature and cultural heritage, we shall be very happy.
