Reprint of the 1911 edition. Oversized Octavo. xv, 665 p. London : S. Swift, 1911. New copy. Gordon was administrator of the Sudan between 1874 and 1880 and was instrumental in the ending of the slave trade in the country. In 1882, Mohammed Ahmad (the Mahdi) objected to Egyptian control of Sudan and rose in revolt. His forces defeated an Egyptian army and cut off British garrisons in the central Sudan. Gordon was sent back to Sudan in 1884 to rescue the isolated garrisons but became cut off in Khartoum. After a ten-month siege, the town fell and Gordon was killed. Public opinion saw Gordon as a hero of Empire and blamed the British government under Gladstone for failing to send a relief column. Sudan remained under local control until Kitchener was successful at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Blunt supported the Mahdi in his revolt against the British in Sudan, and when Khartoum fell and Gordon was killed, Gladstone's Liberal government was unravelling in London. Blunt advocated Afghani as "the one man who could speak directly to the Mahdi", although Afghani had never met him nor was he known to have any access to the self proclaimed messianic leader of the Sudan, and according to Blunt (see My Diaries), rather fantastically, "if the British would back down on Egypt, he could assure peace in the Sudan." Blunt had even more friends in the new conservative government of Salisbury, most notably Lord Randolph Churchill, to whom he eagerly promoted his grand plan. The avowed radical and liberal champion was now considering seeking his own seat in (the new Conservative) government. A scarce title. Not in print for 60 years. This book is very heavy. "From the moment they met, their marriage seemed both inevitable and impossible. Isabel was a schoolgirl, scion of the Arundells, England's most distinguished Catholic family, and when they passed each other while walking at a seaside resort, Richard Burton had already made his mark as a linguist, scholar, traveler, and rebel against Victorian conformity. A hundred yards on, Isabel looked back and found him staring after her: she decided then that she would marry him. It was several years before they met again. By then Burton was one of the most accomplished linguists in the Indian Army. An intelligence agent with a genius for disguise, he had risked death to penetrate Mecca during the hadj, posing as a native pilgrim. He would soon become even more famous as one of the earliest explorers of East Africa. After their marriage, the Burtons traveled the world from diplomatic postings in Brazil and Africa to hair-raising adventures in the Syrian desert. In later life Richard courted further controversy as translator of such erotic classics as the unexpurgated edition of The Arabian Nights, The Perfumed Garden, and The Kama Sutra. Based on previously unavailable archives, Mary Lovell has written a compelling joint biography that sets Isabel in her proper place as Burton's equal in daring and endurance, a fascinating figure in her own right." 910p. bibliography.index Book

This is a fascinating account on the political state of India's 'Mashud country', a region to the west of Dera Ismail Khan on the North-West Frontier of India, at a time when there was bitter hostility and serious fighting between the Wazirs and Mahsuds over their boundaries, particularily in the vincinity of Razmak. Captain Hay was in charge of the South Waziristan Agency for 3-4 years, and describes the intricacies of relationships between the feuding tribes, as well as their custom and history. Hay visited many places not previously seen by Europeans and on this journey he and several hundred natives, climbed the region's highest peak in the Preghal range. The region was an independent tribal territory from 1893, remaining outside of British-ruled empire and Afghanistan. Tribal raiding into British-ruled territory was a constant problem for the British, requiring frequent punitive expeditions between 1860 and 1945. The region became part of Pakistan in 1947.

A noteworthy and engaging study of the life and custom of the Chaouïa Berbers, the Aurasian people eastern Algeria's Aurès mountains, and of French influence a region which would be fraught with brutality in a revolutionary war only thirteen years later, as the same people would fight for independence. Describing it as one of the most clearly defined cultural regions in North Africa, the account presents a mixture of cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnographical analyses with topics such as agricultural practices, the tradition of transhumance and annual migration in search of better watered pastures, important commodities in a semi-nomadic society, flat topped dwellings in small villages or dechras, a description of Menâa which was one of the largest villages, defence against invading enemy tribes, weaponry and restrictions on the latter, the impact of French assimilation efforts on Berber society even with a nominal number of foreigners physically present, and in turn, Berber interest in French culture. The lieutenant's account is well illustrated, further providing notes and statistics relating to the images.

Together with a folding map delineating Libya's borders, Sandford discusses the conditions under which the Italian or German-Italian army were currently fighting against the Allies in North Africa, uniquely presenting the enemy's perspective in the early stages of the Western Desert Campaign in an attempt to surmise involvement and strategies of the Libyans, and to vehemently protect Britain's rule over Egypt. Details include political affiliation, climate, geology and topography, water supply, and limitations imposed on disposition of troops. He describes the eastern frontier of Libya as extending from the great mass of crystallined rocks known as 'Uweinat' to the Mediterranean, the Gilf Kebir, the highlands of Cyrenacia, and the southern and south-eastern frontiers in Tibesti.

A favourable review of Philby's autobiography titled "Arabian Days" which was published earlier in the year and was so immediately popular that it was into a second printing, Cheesman deems the work to be a "fair self-portrait" which provides "a complete knowledge of the man." Travelling with his medicine boxes and his teams of canoemen around the junction between the Tigris and the Euphrates, Thesiger visited nearly every village in the Central Marshes and came to know intimately the people who inhabit this landscape of islands, lakes and waterways, living with them in their reed houses and sharing their unique way of life. He beautifully evokes the landscape and its teeming wildlife and vividly brings to life the many friends he made among the Marsh Arabs. His extraordinary photographs provide a stunning record of the last remnants of a people and their culture. Pre-dates his book, 'The Marsh Arabs', first published in 1964.

This is a unique and captivating account of an archaeological journey through the air, undertaken by Crawford, at his own expense, to Egypt, Trans-Jordan, and Iraq. Having secured the cordial interest of the British Air Ministry and of the officers commanding the air forces in those countries, he was able to select from their negatives several thousand important pictures, which he brought home with him, to take part himself in flights over the areas of particular interest, and to leave behind him an awakened interest in the objects for which he had made the journey. A fascinating glimpse into what he was able to collect and to achieve, which has been of immeasurable value from an archaeological point of view, for example by revealing a buried site which previously could have only been revealed by perhaps years of excavation. Photographs include that of a ruined town on the Tigris between Mosul and Baghdad, seventy miles south-west of Mosul in the grassy desert; the Palace situated on the Persian Plateau in Hatra and its courtyard not previously observed; the so-called Median Wall; the Arch of Ctesiphon; as well as Old Basra and Modern Basra.

Undertaken at the behest of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, this expedition's objective was to study the geology of Bakhtiari country, an area believed to possess oil located in south-western Persia, between the Diz or Sehzar River on the north-west and the Karun River on the south-east - home to the semi-nomadic Bakhtiari tribes. Of particular geological interest are Harrison's depictions of the region's narrow valleys or tangs, his discussion of imbrics and tectonics and the expedition's arduous trekking itself: via Zeloi; the whale-backed mountain range, Kuh-i-Pabda; Chulbar on the north-eastern base of Kuh-i-Pabda; the Gapi basin; following a branch of the river Ab-i-Balut; Silili; Baznui; the country around Qal'eh Kuh and Ushtarinan Kuh; Qal'eh Pachah; Niyakan and Kuh-i-Dalan and numerous other locations. Accompanied by interesting photographs of the area's mountains and a large folding map of the territory covered.
