This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. In November 1893 an agreement was signed between the British and Afghan governments defining on paper the boundary of the spheres of influence of the two governments wherever they touched each other. The British representative during the negotiations was sir Mortimer Durand, and the boundary in question was since then referred to as the Durand Line. Demarcation was successfully carried out along a considerable portion of the frontier. Owing however to conditions prevailing in tribal territory certain parts of the boundary line could not be visited, and much of it remained undemarcated. This narrative describes how in 1894, one of the gaps, a small but important one, had been filled in.

This is a fascinating paper which pre-dates his book "The Merv Oasis. Travels and Adventures East of the Caspian during the Years 1879-80-81 including Five Months’ Residence among the Tekkés of Merv." Also published in 1882. O’Donovan, an Irish newspaper correspondent who had covered the Franc-Prussian war and the Russo-Turkish war, undertook his journey to Merv as a representative of the ‘Daily News’. In 1879 he travelled with two native servants from the Caspian Sea through Khorassan and at great risk reached Merv. Whilst en-route for Merv O’Donovan witnessed through binoculars from a hilltop the Destruction of Geok-Tepe and the massacre of the panic-stricken Turcomans ordered by Skobelev. Suspected by the Turcomans of being a Russian emissary, or perhaps believing he could gain them the protection of the British, he was kept captive for several months, eventually managing to extricate himself and returning to London. The Merv Oasis is a unique record of the Tekkes inhabiting the oasis of Merv and its ancient ruins while themselves awaiting the Russian onslaught. "A most daring, difficult, and hazardous feat, with which his name will always be associated." - DNB.

A fascinating and dangerous journey through Ethiopia and Yemen, with an explanation of the rich and varied culture surrounding the drug qat, legal in UK but banned in US. 'Eating the Flowers of Paradise is an extraordinary journey in a corner of the earth which has eluded investigation by explorers until this time. It abounds with fascinating and exciting fresh material presented in a style comparable to the accepted classics of travel in Arabia and the Middle East' (Norman Lewis). Qat is legal in UK but not in US, experts claim its mild as tea or as addictive as cocaine, but Rushby explores its use which is central to life in Yemen.
