In-8°, (30 cc) including portrait, frontispice and title page, pp. 272, 4 engraved folded plates, binding in calf with title at the spine. First edition. The first part of this work, entitled Compendium theologiae mohammedicae arabice et latine is an edition in Arabic, with translation, of a small work similar to Abû Sujâ s Mukhtasar and is probably the first printed edition of such an essential Islamic work in the West. The second part is Reelant’ s most important contribution towards a better understanding of Islam in which he sets out to rectify many popular misbeliefs with quotations from the Coran and other Arabic sources.
28 pages. Plus photographic plates and a large fold-out colour map measuring approximately 10 x 15 inches (26 x 38cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a most insightful first-hand account of the extraordinarily complex social and governmental organization in the Hadhramaut in its time of transition from early social organization to a slightly more developed government. The author discusses the seven distinct classes of society and the order of their importance, provides a thorough description of his journey through wadis and villages, and remarks on tribal raids, caravans, ruins, tombs, and much more. This is a comprehensive account, pre-dating the author's book, entitled "Arabia and the Isles," first published in 1942. The accompanied colour map shows Ingrams' traverse from Mukalla to Seihut of the Aden Protectorate. Ingrams was described by James Lunt as 'a strong man, with a deep understanding of the Arab psychology,' he became known as Al Muslahi, 'the settler [of disputes]'. Ingrams wore quasi-Arab dress—which he claimed was more comfortable and practical and was considered a compliment by the local people—and insisted his British staff did likewise (ODNB)

11 pages, including an in-text sketch map. Plus photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Prince Sixte of Bourbon's knowledgeable analysis of potential trans-Sahara communications and the most feasible route into and across the Sahara: through North Africa - the Sudan route and what the prince describes as the natural basis for conquest of the south; in the west, the Mauretanian route which avails itself of the Saura valley and the old caravan route running along the Hank and, the route he favoured most, that of the Congo - the trans-African option he considered would serve the international interests of central Africa. Features a compelling narrative of the prince's 9,000 mile journey across the Eastern French Sahara, including details of the expedition personnel; of the motor cars (solidly built Delahayes) and the route: Tunis, southern Algeria, south of Tripoli, across the great Ténèré running from Bilma to Tripoli; Tibesti (peopled according to the Tuaregs with djinns and fairies; Wada to Fort Archambault in the Ubangi-Shari and a return to Lake Chad. Includes really entertaining anecdotes of the local Tubus and vivid descriptions of the volcanic country. In addition are lovely illustrations of the Canyons of Tibesti, a dance of Sara warriors, Borku dancers at Faya, the arrival of the expedition in Agadez, and trucks crossing the dunes of the "grand Erg oriental".

Reprint of the 1911 edition. Oversized Octavo. xv, 665 p. London : S. Swift, 1911. New copy. Gordon was administrator of the Sudan between 1874 and 1880 and was instrumental in the ending of the slave trade in the country. In 1882, Mohammed Ahmad (the Mahdi) objected to Egyptian control of Sudan and rose in revolt. His forces defeated an Egyptian army and cut off British garrisons in the central Sudan. Gordon was sent back to Sudan in 1884 to rescue the isolated garrisons but became cut off in Khartoum. After a ten-month siege, the town fell and Gordon was killed. Public opinion saw Gordon as a hero of Empire and blamed the British government under Gladstone for failing to send a relief column. Sudan remained under local control until Kitchener was successful at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Blunt supported the Mahdi in his revolt against the British in Sudan, and when Khartoum fell and Gordon was killed, Gladstone's Liberal government was unravelling in London. Blunt advocated Afghani as "the one man who could speak directly to the Mahdi", although Afghani had never met him nor was he known to have any access to the self proclaimed messianic leader of the Sudan, and according to Blunt (see My Diaries), rather fantastically, "if the British would back down on Egypt, he could assure peace in the Sudan." Blunt had even more friends in the new conservative government of Salisbury, most notably Lord Randolph Churchill, to whom he eagerly promoted his grand plan. The avowed radical and liberal champion was now considering seeking his own seat in (the new Conservative) government. A scarce title. Not in print for 60 years. This book is very heavy.
