"Souvenirs personnels, jetés sur le papier, au courant de la plume, en l'année 1868". L'autore, rimasto anonimo, non era tuttavia, come avverte la nota editoriale, di nazionalità francese ("..son auteur appartient à une nationalité étrangère.. et nous lui laissons l'entière responsabilité de ses opinions"), narra in base ai suoi ricordi di testimone oculare dei fatti la spedizione francese del 1860 in Libano e in Siria, descrivendo fra l'altro l'efferato massacro di Damasco e gli eventi seguiti all'occupazione francese. Nel maggio del 1860 un piccolo gruppo di maroniti aveva aperto il fuoco contro un gruppo di drusi che stava entrando a Beirut, uccidendone uno e ferendone due. Il fatto scatenò una scia di sangue e di rivolte tutto il Libano. In soli tre giorni, dal 29 al 31 maggio del 1860, 60 villaggi nelle vicinanze di Beirut vennero distrutti, 33 cristiani e 48 drusi vennero uccisi. I contadini drusi assediarono i monasteri e le missioni cattoliche locali, bruciandoli ed uccidendone i monaci. Dopo l'eccidio di oltre 10.000 cristiani l'intervento francese in difesa della locale popolazione cristiana e quello inglese in difesa dei drusi ristabilirono l'ordine e posero fine ai massacri, riorganizzando territorialmente a amministrativamente il Libano. Una commissione internazionale separò l'area di Monte Libano dalla Siria, riunendole in due parti distinte, ciascuna sotto il governo di un mutasarrif (governatore) cristiano ma non libanese nominato dal sultano ottomano, con l'approvazione delle potenze europee; il sistema del mutasarrifato sopravvisse sino al 1918, quando cessò col crollo dell'Impero Ottomano.

Le héros, "René Dabert" y évoque plus ses nuits de bamboches et les bas-fonds de Beyrouth (il évoque également Damas) que ses études, mais l'ouvrage propose une vision rarement exposée de la Syrie et du Liban.
