169326846
1693 VOYAGES 1ed Europe France Italy Spain England RUSSIA Germany MAPS 7v

Claude Jordan's "Historic Voyages of Europe" is a rare 17th-century collection of voyage reports from across Europe. First published in 1693 this set offers thorough descriptive lists of voyagers in Spain Italy Great Britain Holland Germany and Russia. While the accounts of discovery are important the draw of this set is the inclusion of the folding map in each volume. Maps from 17th-century voyage histories are particularly desirable – so much so that they are often extracted from books and framed separately. It is incredibly rare to find each of these maps fully intact – truly a rare find!

Item number: #26846

Price: $995

JORDAN Claude

Voyages historiques de l'Europe

A Paris: 1693-1698. 1st editions

Details:

· Collation: Complete with all pages; 7 volumes

o Vol. I – France

o Vol. II – Spain

o Vol. III – Italy

o Vol. IV – Great Britain Ireland

o Vol. V – Holland

o Vol. VI – Germany

o Vol. VII – Russia

o 8 folding maps

· Provenance: Armorial bookplate – The Right Honorable Hugh Earle of Loudoun Lord Machline &c.

o Hugh Campbell 3rd Earl of Loudoun KT PC c. 1675–1731 was a Scottish landowner peer and statesman. Contemporary dark green half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt floral ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers. = A very rare publication by the French botanist Claude Thomas Alexis Jordan 1814-1897. "Born into a wealthy family he chose a career path in natural history rather than becoming a businessman like his father. From 1836 to 1877 he traveled widely throughout France collecting many botanical specimens on trips to the Massif Central the Alps the Pyrenees as well as on excursions to locations near Lyon. As a member of the Linnaean Society of Lyon he came under the influence of several local naturalists including Marc Antoine Timeroy an amateur botanist who would have a profound impact upon his career. At Jordan's extensive botanical garden in Lyon with his assistant Joseph Victor Viviand-Morel he cultivated many thousands of different varieties of plants. Known for his micro-morphological analysis of plants - as a taxonomist he proposed a narrow conceptualization for the determination of species. Because of this he was widely criticized for his tendency to differentiate species too finely" Wikipedia. He described nearly 1700 new plants many of which are found in this work. In total seven "fragments" were published of which these are the first four. All published by Maison and Weigel. The last three which are not included were published in Paris by J. B. Baillière with only another seven plates. Stafleu and Cowan err in listing Baillière as publisher of part 4. All present parts have title pages but in three of the parts they are included in the page numbering. On the verso of the half-title of the third and largest part Jordan wrote a signed dedication to "Monsieur Huguenin"; most probably the French botanist Auguste Huguenin 1780-1860 writer of the Enumeratio plantarum exsiccatarum quae ex collectione A. Huguenin à Chambéry Savoie: promutua commutatione offeruntur 1851. Fore edge uncut. A very good copy. Stafleu and Cowan 3409. hardcover

159200695
A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME ---- 24 p. 4to A-C4 189 x 150 mm ---- First and only edition of this curious digest of time a pamphlet the author composed for his friends as the title indicates. Jordan worked as a cellar keeper Keller in the German village of Steinheim though we find little else about him. ¶ He opens his brief treatise with a philosophical summary of ancient time outlines the traditional ages of the world and offers Galen's six periods of the typical human life. As one might expect Jordan then explores the salient details of the standard solar year—mentioning the new Gregorian calendar—and the typical lunar cycle. But then he ventures much deeper into the weeds of time. He discusses the concept of an annus emergens when time is measured from an extraordinary event e.g. the founding of Rome or the birth of Christ; the lengths of the years for other planets in the known solar system; the lengths of the four seasons each introduced with a line of verse reminiscent of emblem literature; alternative starting points for the year; the twelve signs of the zodiac a chart of where they fall during the year and still more on the zodiac structure; the month's division into weeks and the week into seven days with historical background on the structure of a day plus notes on the etymological roots of each day's name; when different groups start their days e.g. some count from noon others from midnight; and how the day is divided into still smaller segments. The author ends with a brief postscript. "Let those who want read; those who do not let them decline" Legant qui velint: qui non volunt despiciant. ¶ We find a single copy in North America Linda Hall and this the only copy we find in auction records. ---- CONDITION: Sewn but without covers clearly removed from a larger Sammelband. Last leaf is blank. ¶ Small spot of skinned paper adhered to A2v and A3r affecting a couple of words on the former though hardly affecting legibility; a bit dusty at the edges; remnants of adhesive on spine. ---- REFERENCES: USTC 699894; VD16 ZV1333 ¶ J.W. 1909034648Stuttgart: Fritz Lehmann 1909. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Folio 32 x 25 cm. Preface dated 1909. The English edition translated by Dr. K. Jordan. Bound in one volume pp. 8 379 5 89 fine chomolithographed plates. Bound in contemporary publisher's half black leather with black textured cloth covered boards gilt lettering to the spine. A little general wear and some rubbing to extremities and joints professional and inconspicuous repair to head and tail of joints. Contents clean and tight original grey paper endpapers paper and plates toned as usual a little offsetting to one or two plates very short nicks to the lower margins of pages 229-234. Overall a very good copy of sought after vol. I tome I which covers European butterflies. Bibliographic note: This work which was published in three language editions German English & French is renowned for its outstanding colour plates some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks including metallic inks resulting in quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed. But this meticulous chromolithographic printing was incredibly expensive and labour intensive. The project was hugely ambitious - to cover every known species of the World's Macrolepidoptera but it was plagued by setbacks including two world wars and was never finished after almost 50 years the project finally came to an end in 1954. The most important collections of butterflies and moths were consulted including those of L. W. Rothschild of Tring the British Museum the Paris Natural History Museum and so on. Comparatively recently having been out of print for over half a century a number of original sets were discovered in the printer's warehouse and these have been marketed with a hefty price tag. The publisher tended to use the same casings for each volume regardless of how thick that volume was so where a volume only consists of say 25 plates the binding/casing appear too large at the spine for the contents or alternatively blank pages were inserted at the rear.
