FIRST EDITION OF THIS ELUSIVE AND SIGNIFICANT WORK. Ainsworth's excellent account of the Euphrates expedition to which he was appointed surgeon and geologist. The expedition was intended to "examine the feasibility of opening up the Mesopotamian rivers to steam navigation as a new route to India as well as asserting British political presence in the area promoting British commercial ties and gathering scientific and archaeological data" ODNB.<br> This is arguably the fullest contemporary account of the expedition as the fraught publication history of Chesney's account meant that his 'NARRATIVE.London 1868 was ultimately less detailed than intended.<br> This copy was owned by John Brinton who was elected member of parliament for Kidderminster in 1880 but accepted the Chiltern Hundreds next month because he was holding a government contract at the time. He was reelected without opposition and held the seat until 1886. In 1887 he presented Brinton Park to Borough of Kidderminster. Wynne-Rushton' to five government ministries from 'Staff Brigadier Muhsen Mohamed Ali Acting Director General of Guidance & Broadcasting'. Begins: 'Mr. G. Wynne-Rushton who is now staying in Baghdad is the Advertising Manager of Messrs. Aghabab Advertising & Publicity Bureau Baghdad representing the British Commonwealth & Empire Trades Index in Iraq. Mr. Rushton intends to allocate in the said Index articles dealing with Iraq and he therefore desires to obtain information statistics and pictures as relating to your Ministry. You are requested to extend to him the necessary facilities on his approach to you.' TWO: Envelope with printed Business letterhead of the Aghabab Advertising & Publicity Bureau. 1945191029Baghdad: Iraqi Army Press c.1945. for the benefit of the Arabic language First edition with over 12000 words printed under the auspices of the Lexicon Committee of the Iraqi Ministry of Defence. The first and second world wars were catalysers for the sharp increase in the production of new Arabic glossaries and dictionaries for officers and soldiers stationed in the Middle East. In the early 1940s special attention was paid to technical dictionaries issued by governments and ministries rather than colloquial phrasebooks produced for individuals aiming at translation consistency and standardization. The dictionary was printed "to collect collate and preserve.the words employed by the late Prof. Abdul-Masih Wazir in his numerous translations of English military publications". Wazir was director of the translation department of the Iraqi Ministry of Defence in 1923-43. It also provided "an easy means of reference for the use of the translators of English military writings". The loose-leaf format was designed to facilitate revision. Octavo 160 x 105 mm. Text in Arabic and English. Issued as 21 pamphlets numbered 1-18 and 18A-20 roughly one per alphabet letter. Original brown cloth yellow stamped paper boards bootlace stitching.
