First and only edition of this extremely rare pamphlet includes the chapters of 'From Marseilles to Gabon' and 'From Libreville to Banguela' of Trivier's expeditions in Africa. First chapter includes Trivier's Mozambique travel by ship over the Strait of Gibraltar. In this chapter, Trivier described the purpose of his voyage as "After returning to France from my last trip in January 1890, I declared that many more places should be seen. I have written many articles about the necessity of looking for new ways to eliminate the fears and worries caused by McKinley tariffs that are harmed everywhere. As a nice result of this, the Paris City Council and the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce decided not to be dispatched to the hometown of Africans with an amount of money close to 11,000 francs.". In the second chapter, he describes Congo and other parts of Central Africa. French explorer Elisee Trivier followed in the footsteps of Scottish missionary David Livingstone in his attempt to explore the interior of Africa. Trivier's expedition traveled in 1889 up the Congo and across Africa to the island of Zanzibar on the eastern coast. Trivier is considered the first French explorer to have crossed Africa. Lowisohn published this distinctly modern study and census nearly a century before the official advent of Zionism, covering the many places that appear in the bible. Lowisohn (1788-1821) was a Jewish Hungarian historian and poet who brought the ideas of the German enlightenment to Hungary as part of the Haskalah. Title translates to Toward the historic day of judgment, the Jewish people between curses and redemption Published early in the Holocaust, Ben-Adir argues for the enactment of national introspection and calm rather than territorialism! Ben-Adir (18781942) was writer and Jewish socialist leader, born in Krucha, Belorussia. He was a child prodigy and left for university in Minsk at the age of 16. While there, he was heavily influenced by Jewish socialism. After the First Zionist Congress in 1897, Ben-Adir published an article advocating political Zionism in opposition to the ideology of Ahad Ha-Am. After then Kishinev pogrom of 1903 Ben-Adir published a call for the formation of a Jewish party which would combine the aims of revolutionary socialism with national Jewish aspirations. Ben-Adir was one of the founders and ideologists of the Vozrozhdeniye group, and of its successor of the Sejmists (Jewish Socialist Workers' Party) whose program included Jewish national-political autonomy while envisaging territorial sovereignty as a remote aim. Engraved illustration, depicting Joshua's men about to embark on the entry into the Promised Land. Illustrated cartouche encloses engraved title and colophon. Fine, strong impression on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First, original state, unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free, pH-balanced, buffered archival paper. In a very fine condition. - - First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene (1712-1783), Dutch clergyman, later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School, Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land, alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende," is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768, and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years, the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift, Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments (.) Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem, shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance, the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce, seldom found in any state, practically unavailable in their original, uncoloured state.

This was the third year of Israels Existence, still during the DP period. Includes 8 blue, white, and black cartoons depicting the ways in which Israel bonds are helpful to the young State of Israel and to the person purchasing them, each with a caption. Cartoon topics include absorbing new immigrants, expanding fishing and citrus industries, and manufacturing chemicals at the dead sea. It is up to us to determine whether they are to accomplish their objective in the three-year economic development program, or whether they are to struggle for a generation, because of lack of adequate capital. Litvak (18741932) was the pseudonym of Haim Yankl Helfand, socialist, Yiddish writer, translator, and editor. Helfand who grew up in a strict orthodox home, joined an illegal study group in Vilna organized by the Jewish Social Democratic Group in Russia, the organization that later established the Bund in 1897.The Jewish socialist intelligentsia in Vilna immediately recognized Helfands usefulness to the movement, as he was a native Yiddish speaker with a traditional Jewish background and competency in Russian. From 1905 onward (after being exiled to Siberia) , he began writing under the pseudonym A. Litvak. Between 1905 and 1914, he was one of the most influential and prolific Yiddish writers for the Bund. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's grained crimson cloth, small plate of Jerusalem mounted on upper cover, black lettering, floral endpapers apparently lacking free endpaper, cloth bit faded and marked, slight wear at spine ends. Bit shaken, opens stiff, but nevertheless a lovely copy. ~ The travelogue of Wilhelm Alexander describes the pilgrimage in 1910 of 68 Jews, predominantly Hungarian, from Budapest to Palestine. They first travelled to Triest, where they embarked on the "Elektra", sailing to Alexandria. From Alexandria, via Cairo and Port Said, they arrived at Jaffa. Alexander's report is a remarkable account. It combines his critical, sometime painful observations, detailed descriptions of meetings with the local community and dignitaries, with a travelogues of pilgrimages to the holy places, interweaved with prayers and words of praise, which he brings in Hebrew. Very rare.
