Para prevenir tal acción España envió al Atlántico a la fragata "Gerona" que cerca de Madeira capturó a un crucero con bandera chilena, construido en Inglaterra, que navegaba en secreto con el nombre de "Canton" y que los españoles renombrarían como "Tornado".
