El Almirante Don Manuel Blanco Encalada (1790-1876) Comandante General de la Escuadra Chileno-Peruana, desde 1866 en guerra con España, mandó comprar dos nuevos y poderosos barcos en Inglaterra que se dirigían hacia el Puerto de Cádiz, con la intención de atacarlo. Para prevenir tal acción España envió al Atlántico a la fragata "Gerona" que cerca de Madeira capturó a un crucero con bandera chilena, construido en Inglaterra, que navegaba en secreto con el nombre de "Canton" y que los españoles renombrarían como "Tornado".
