Dated March 27th 1865 at the Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. in Washington D.C. this document reads as follows: <br /> ____________<br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directress of said hospital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our number all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed. <br /> <br /> signed Geo. It was the primary receiving point for Union soldiers wounded in the eastern theatres of the war as well as those being returned from Confederate prisons such as Libby and Andersonville. The former prisoners were in shockingly poor health due to the conditions in which they were held with many dying on the transports to Annapolis and those who survived needing much attention. Original handwritten letter dated March 27 1865 from the "Rooms of the Y.M.C.A." in Washington DC. The letter organizes a "Special Relief Corps" of short term nurse volunteers standing ready to travel from Washington DC to Annapolis to assist in the care of soldiers in the U.S. General Hospital there. The text of the letter is as follows: <br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directoress of said capital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Contains some illustrations. A scarce family history of those who lived around the Chotank Creek near the mouth of the Potomac River in Virginia. "Richard Foote b.1632 came from England to Westmoreland County Virginia returned to England on several business trips married Hester Howard in 1657 and remained in England. His son Richard Foote II 1665-1725 immigrated in 1688 to land in Stafford and King George Counties Virginia. The name "Chotank" was given to the area and people from there were known as "Chotankers." Descendants lived in Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Alabama Mississippi and elsewhere." Jonathan Bayard Smith 1742-1812 Philadelphia merchant and member of the Continental Congress in 1777-1778 was prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas for the city and county of Philadelphia from 1777 to 1788 and a justice of that court from 1778 to 1788. Beginning with 1792 he served two years as alderman of Philadelphia and in the latter year was auditor general of Pennsylvania under Gov. Thomas Mifflin. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed with loss at ends of spine and corners; joints are cracked; old dampstain in lower part of pages 189-240; occasional foxing heavier on a few pages; occasional ink notations; otherwise clean and solid. Some foxing and light soiling with a few light stains and creases and trifling surface loss from insect damage; light wear to the edges; verso of the linen backing a little waterstained; overall a working map in decent condition. A large United States Navy Hydrographic Office chart with five inset charts showing the anchorages of Walwich Bay Walvis Bay Angra Pequena Lüderitz Bay and St Helena and channels through the Abrolhos and Manoel Luiz Banks. The two sheets incorporate corrections to December 1881 and January 1882 respectively. <p>Pencil annotations show the tracks of three voyages two south-east towards the Cape of Good Hope in March-April and November-December 1883 and one in the opposite direction in April-May 1886 this is identified in the right-hand margin as part of a voyage from Hong Kong to London made by one J.B. Newcomb. A further partial track is given in purple ink dated only 'Route in October November and December'. Lighthouses are highlighted with spots of red and yellow colouring.
