Presented 'with mind and soul from Iceland'.Vigfusson contributed a two-page article to this volume focusing on Sela. With illustrations throughout in colour by R. Randolph Ashton. Containing a foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales. Presented in an excellent unclipped dust wrapper. In the publisher's original full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart; just a little bumped to the extremities and the head of the spine. Dust wrapper is in excellent condition with just the slightest wear to the head of the spine and extremities. James Paris Hill Joseph Carpenter and George W. Chapin. The original Atlantic De Laine factory was located near the junction of Hartford Plainfield and Manton streets in Providence. The company was founded in 1851 to manufacture delaine - a wool muslin which was one of the earliest mass produced worsteds. The company went bankrupt in the Panic of 1873. Not found in OCLC. Alex Addison 1759-1807 a Scottish immigrant was admitted to the washington County Pa. bar in 1787 and appointed the president judge of the Fifth Judicial District of Pennsylvania in 1791. Bookplate on back fixed endpaper indicating that this was presented to the Washington County Historical Society by Janet M. Clark in 1905. 17760087821776. Near Fine -. 1 handwritten document of 4 pages 39 x 25 cm. folded. On 12 Dec. 1776 William Rowan of Fawn Township York Co. Pa. yeoman mortgaged 245 acres in Fawn Township to Beulah Paschall of the city of Philadelphia spinster for 300 pounds of Pennsylvania due by 12 Dec. 1783 with interest paid yearly. Signed by William Rowan; witnesses Peter Miller and Abraham Shoemaker; Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice Thomas Willing; and York County Recorder Samuel Johnston. Embossed paper stamp of Pennsylvania. The mortgagee was Beulah Paschall 1732-1793 a Philadelphia Quaker and owner of Cedar Grove. Thomas Willing 1731-1821 was a highly successful merchant and real estate developer as well as a Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice from 1767 to 1776. He served as the first president of both the Bank of North America and the Bank of the United States and supported the American Revolution. York County Recorder Samuel Johnston on the other hand had come to York County from England as an official representative of the Penn family. He held a variety of county offices at various times in addition to that of recorder of deeds: clerk of courts prothonotary and register of wills. When he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolution he had to relinquish all public offices. However he did not opposed the Revolution. Two of his sons-in-law served as colonels in the American militia and two of his sons were privates. By 1786 Johnston lived in Maryland and was admitted as an attorny in Baltimore County. History of Lancaster Lebanon Dauphin Counties Pennsylvania touching also on York Cumberland Berks Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties specifically providing the township borough and county boundary descriptions in the period between 1729 and 1848 during which time Dauphin County was formed from portions of Lancaster County and Lebanon County formed from portions of Dauphin and Lancaster. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter. No publisher information provided though contents indicate publication date in or about 1848. The Huguenots were "French" Protestants though most who emigrated to Pennsylvania actually spoke German who fled the contested border territories between France and Germany in the early 18th century and settled predominantly in the Hudson River valley of New York state and southeastern Pennsylvania. Each issue of this journal presents various historical articles on the influence of the Huguenots in the Mid-Atlantic region and elsewhere throughout North America. Very scarce.
