Francis Hopkinson 1737-1791 a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and composer was tried in 1780 on charges of accepting bribes; he was acquitted. John Nicholson d. 1800 financier Comptroller General of Pennsylvania and land speculator was charged with financial irregularities in 1793; he was acquitted. Minor cover soil and edge wear with an old vertical crease from the pamphlet being folded lengthwise. Augustus W. Bradford as the Union Party candidate for governor defeated Democrat Benjamin C. Howard by nearly 30000 votes on November 6 1861. Maryland had seemed to teeter on the brink of secession just 6 or 7 months earlier. Bradford's speech here discusses this phenomenon and what he considers false and misleading impressions then circulating in regard to Maryland's true sentiments and sympathies. Thomas J. John R. Kenly had just been admitted to the bar in Baltimore when the War with Mexico broke out. He raised a company of volunteers and led them into battle as a captain in the Baltimore-Washington Battalion. This is his excellent first-hand account of these experiences. <br /> <br /> Kenly would later serve in the Union army during the Civil War as a colonel in the 1st Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry. Two volumes bound in original blue cloth with spine titles in gilt. Moderate wear to the bindings. The bindings have some chips or abrasions in the cloth which seem to have been touched up with blue paint or coloring. This is more evident at the top edge of front cover on Volume II as well as on the side of its spine. Endpapers foxed. Text is toned but generally clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf of Volume I "To S. A. Ashe / with the author's esteem / Landon C. Bell / May 20 1929." Samuel A'Court Ashe 1840-1938 was a lawyer and a Confederate Captain in the Civil War. After the War he served in the North Carolina legislature and was a noted historian author and defender of the Confederacy. There is also a signed typed letter laid in loosely from Drewry McKee Smith to Captain Sam Ashe dated 1929. This is actually a copy of a letter to someone else that the sender signed and sent to Captain Ashe. Includes the original stamped envelope which is on browned paper. Unfortunately someone has stuck this in a folded and taped mylar sleeve and the envelop is stuck to the tape inside the sleeve. The books are NOT signed by Samuel A.
