This report contains the constitution and by-laws of the Union Benevolent Association as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked in the previous year. The male officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. Recipes include: apple snow; meat cakes; apple omelet; walnut pie; transparent pies; temperance mince pie; Comanche candy; kippered cherries; and various ice cream and water ice recipes. In addition to recipes includes other household tips such as how to take care of your parasol during the winter and how to bleach a straw bonnet. Handwritten recipe on front fixed endpaper for sponge cake from "Mrs. S." The Memoranda pages include two handwritten recipes: "Gertie Rogers fine Ginger Cake" and "Miss Landis Devil Food." Scarce. 1921007841Narberth Pa: Narberth Choral Society 1921. Paperback. Good. 44 p.: illustrations; 22 cm. Tied with red thread; wrapper printed in red and black. The chorus was conducted by Clarence C. Nice. The soloists in this concert were soprano Lucy Marsh and violinist John Richardson. The chorus was accompanied by the Victor Orchestra. The Narberth Choral Society was created in the spring of 1921 opened the Steel Pier in New Jersey in June 1921 and as this program indicates performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City in Nov. of that year. There is no evidence that it continued to exist after that year. In 1923 Clarence C. Nice conducted the San Carlo Opera in 1928 he became director of the Rollins College conservatory by 1932 he was at the Orlando College of Music and in 1935 he became state director of the Florida Federal Music project. American soprano Lucy Isabelle Marsh 1878-1956 recorded frequently for the Victor Talking Machine Co. from 1909 to the late 1920s both under her own name and under the name Anna Howard. Violinist John Richardson 1906-2004 was a child prodigy born in Philadelphia who performed with many orchestras in the Mid-Atlantic region. After attending Curtis he joined the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1935 he became concertmaster of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. He later joined the Dallas Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony. Includes many advertisements for businesses in the Ardmore-Philadelphia area. Quite scarce. 0083351880. Near Fine. 13 handwritten letters to Pennsylvania Representative William Ward. There are two topics addressed by these letters. One topic is who Ward will recommend for a position with the Internal Revenue under James Ashworth 1836-1882 a Philadelphian who had been a captain during the Civil War and as an Internal Revenue official favored appointing an ex-soldier from his district for the position. The other topic is local support for Ward running for the Republican nomination for Senate in 1881. John I. Mitchell was the ultimate Republican candidate; he won against the sitting Democrat William A. Wallace. William Ward 1837-1895 was born in Philadelphia and attended Girard College the boarding school established by Stephen Girard 1750-1831 for poor white male orphans. Ward learned printing while working at the Delaware County Republican in Chester Pa. and then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859. He later served on the Chester City Council and represented Pennsylvania's 6th District in Congress from 1877 to 1883. He married Clara Ecker Ulrich 1837-1916 and they had six children including son William Ward Jr. 1865-1949 who served in the Pennslvania House from 1901 to 1911 and as mayor of Chester from 1911 to 1915 and again in the 1930s. The letters are signed by Thomas N. Cooper James Ashworth and Henry C. Snowden among others. In Near Fine Condition: minimal soiling; light creasing. unknown

On 2 Aug. 1870 James and Susan Bleiler of Doylestown sold to Dr. George T. Harvey of Doylestown a lot of less than a third of an acre with a blacksmith shop and a wheelwright shop in Doylestown on State St. and Court St. Harvey paid $5000 which included assuming 2 judgments and 1 mortgage totalling $2979.96. Signed by James Bleiler and Susan Bleiler witness Belle C. Bleiber Bucks County Justice of the Peace John B. Pugh and Bucks County Recorder of Deeds P. J. Hawk and with his embossed seal. WarDr. George T. Harvey 1813-1893 or earlier was a prominent resident of Doylestown. During the Civil he served as a lieutenant in the Doylestown Guards and then as a captain in the 104th Pennsylvania regiment. Before and after the war Harvey had a drugstore in Doylestown which also housed the Doylestown post office in the 1840s and 1850s. On 25 March 1814 Margaret Cauffman of Philadelphia gentlewoman sold to Isaac Overholtzer of Norriton Township Montgomery County for $650 a lot of woodland of almost 5 acres in Providence Township Montgomery Co. on the road leading from the Germantown and Perkiomen turnpike and on the Norristown Road. Signed by Margaret Cauffman; witnesses Sarah A. Cauffman Catharine Wiseman and Alexander J. Uhlyn; and Delaware County Judge Mark Willcox. Mark Willcox 1743-1827 was the son of Thomas Willcox 1689-1779 the founder of Ivy Mills which produced the paper used for early currency of the United States. He continued to run the paper mill after his father's death in 1779; he also served as an associate judge for Delaware County from 1791 to 1823. His second wife was Anna Mary Cauffman a sister of Margaret Cauffman. In Near Fine Condition; 1 x 10 cm. section lacking at lower left-hand corner with minor loss of writing; otherwise clean and bright. unknown

Cuming of Philadelphia merchant mortgaged a three-story brick house at 1736 Grove St. Philadelphia for $900 to be paid within three years. Signed by John K. Cuming witnesses Harry B. Yerger and Frank A. Brunner notary public Harry B. Yerger with his stamp and Philadelphia County Recorders of Deeds John O'Connell and John Virdin. The note of satisfaction on 16 Oct. 1901 was signed by Kate E. Scott. John K. Cuming 1830-1915 was a prominent Philadelphian who served on the Select Council the Citizens' Municipal Association and the Board of City Trusts and was president of the Tenth National Bank for many years. Franklin Benjamin Gowen 1836-1889 served as president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from 1870 to 1884 and again briefly in 1886. During his presidency he was responsible for the railroad illegally running its own mining operations and for violent and indiscriminate attacks on the Molly Maguires and mineworkers in general. In this speech Gowen argued against aspects of a bill to control railroad freight discrimination proposed by Willis James Hulings 1850-1924 representative from Venango County in the Pennsylvania legislature. The text of the bill in included here; it was enacted. Scarce. Hemig 1891-1978 was born in Reading Pa.; by 1916 he had moved to Philadelphia where he worked as a waiter and assistant manager at Schwoerer's cafe on Market St. through 1930 or later. In that year the census indicates that his wife was Elsie and though he could read and write he had not attended college. He used these four advertising notebooks and diaries to records information about his life from 1916 to 1920. 1 Central Trust Co. diary. approx. 80 p.: illustrations tables; 10 cm. Calf with Central Trust Company emblem gilt-stamped on front cover. All page edges gilt. Endpapers are light green printed in blue. Front free endpaper has illustration of the Central Trust Company Camden N.J. and list of officers and directors. On Dec. 31 1915 Hemig noted that he played his last game of pool per his New Year's resolution. However this is crossed out and on Jan. 7 he notes that he played pool. In June 1916 he notes the Admen's Parade and in Nov. he notes the election of Woodrow Wilson. For most of the year he records his work hours. In Very Good Condition: edges rubbed; first leaf has closed tear; solid. <br/> 2 W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining Co. advertising notebook. Philadelphia: W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining Co. 1915. 6 101 7-13 p.; 11 cm. Full calf with name of company embossed on front cover. Calendars attached to inside of cover. No date of publication; includes calendars for 1916 and 1917. W.M. McCahan a grocer established a molasses house in 1873 which he converted into a sugar refinery in 1892. In 1920 it was sold to a Cuban sugar refiner Czarnikow-Rionda Co. and became W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining and Molasses Co. which in 1944 was sold to the American Sugar Refining Co. becoming the Philadelphia Refining Co. In addition to the calendars the book contains information on the products sold by McCahan statistics on world sugar prices over many years and various type of business information. The unpaginated pages are graph paper where Hemig recorded the sale of pies throughout Philadelphia. In Good Condition: leather is heavily rubbed with minor loss at head of spine; occasional staining and soiling. 3 Diary 1917 Atlas & Manual. 128 p.: tables color maps; 14 cm. Light green cloth over light card cover with black stamped cover title. No publication information. All pages red. Corners rounded. The diary portion of this small book contains ruled pages with one week per page as well as some memoranda pages. Hemig wrote his draft number on the front free endpaper verso. He recorded his hours of work; visiting his family in Reading; the death of Buffalo Bill; the death of his father; and the declaration of war against Germany. In Jan. "the Boss forbid us to take tips." On June 5 Hemig placed a patriotic sticker and wrote "Must Redgister for War" but on July 4 "Examined for Army I did not Pass." In Good Condition: cover is soiled; starting to split over back joint. 4 The Excelsior Diary 1913. approx. 200 p.: tables; 13 cm. Leather flap binding with "Excelsior Diary" gilt-stamped on the flap. All page edges marbled. The first 28 pages contain one month per page and then the usual useful information including interest tables and a weekly table of wages. The remainder of the book contains lined paper arranged as a diary with two days per page. On the first few pages Hemig recorded candy recipes; his diary entries start on the Jan. 20 page with an entry for May 10 1920 indicating that he had started a new job and the circus was in town. Entries continue for a month or so then nothing until pages printed for Nov. and Dec. Final pages contain pages lined for accounting with some used. In Good Condition: flap is detached but present; spine is rubbed with loss of leather; pages are clean and tight. hardcover

Hannum 1915-2007 was a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1991. Leo H. McKay was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer County Pa. from 1954 to 1968. In this book he discusses 12 trials of particular interest during his time on that bench. Scarce. The names of the patronesses are printed: Mrs. Hartman Kuhn Mrs. Harry McCall Mrs. Charles Macalater Jr. Mrs. Francis Peters Mrs. George Blight and Mrs. Edward Merrell. With this is a light pink sheet 16 x 12 cm. folded and printed with the dates Mon. Jan. 15 Tues. Jan. 30 and Thurs. Feb. 8 and times. The music began at 9:00 the German Cotillion was at 12:00 and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia also known as "The Assemblies" was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States. To attend one either had to be a subscriber a person invited who pays a fee to attend or be sponsored by a subscriber. After the Civil War the Assemblies were held at the Academy of Music until 1904 when it moved to the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. Langhorne Wesley Wister 1834-1891 was the son of William Wister and Sarah Logan Fisher Wister and served as a Brev. Brig. Gen. in the Civil War. No year is given; 1872 1877 and 1883 are the years in which the calendar corresponds to the dates given between the end of the Civil War and Wister's death. All 5 volumes are square and remarkably tight considering their size. Inner hinges are perfect. Corners are NOT bumped. All plates and text pages are clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Illustrated with hundreds of steel engravings and other plates not counted in the pagination. There are over 1000 illustrations and photos in all. Uniformly bound in the original sturdy gray cloth. Each volume is stamped with a bright blue spine panel and lettered in blue and gold. Volumes 1-3 contain an exhaustive history of New Jersey prepared by some of the region's most qualified historians. Volumes 4 and 5 are "mug books" with biographical sketches of the state's favorite sons -- prominent figures from New Jersey industry education politics and commerce. Included are a wide range of biographies from the truly great and important to ordinary citizens from Thomas Edison to the local plumbing contractor no offense intended to any local plumbing contractors. Apparently anyone willing to pay for the privilege could get their picture and biographical profile published here. Even so these volumes are of interest and importance for the wealth of historical and biographical data and hundreds of portraits and photos available from no other single source.
