Octavo single issue printed wrappers. Features the first publication of the classic tale "The Wondersmith." This story is considered an early robot story. A toyshop owner plans to massacre thousands on the Christmas holiday by supernaturally animated small toy soldiers dolls and animals with small poisoned blades. This story influenced other writers and can be seen today in popular film such as Chuckie and others. Jessica Amanda Salmonson writes in her introduction to O'Brien's works ".O'Brien is the most important figure after Poe and before Lovecraft in modern horror literature. "18" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. Caption title. Publication information from library records. Robert Emmet Monaghan 1822-1895 was a Pennsylvania lawyer and represented Chester County in the state legislature. His mechanical vote counter was patented on March 14 1848. This pamphlet reports on the demonstration of the machine given to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1849. Ink notations on p. 3 correct the description of the levers indicating Yea and Nay votes. In Very Good- Condition: first leaf and last leaf are detached but present; light foxing on p. 8; otherwise clean. J. Hodgson, printer unknown
