Il Belgio è stato per ragioni linguistiche il paese in cui la frode editoriale era più diffusa, ma anche quello in cui si è iniziato il processo per arrivare al diritto d'autore" di moderna concezione.

The first complete reissue of the original edition of 1725 of which only the British Library copy is known. It was published jointly by Sotheran of London and William Peace of Kirkwall in Orkney. John Gow (1697-1725), the 'Orkney Pirate', was the son of a wealthy merchant from Wick in Caithness. He grew up in the Orkney town of Stromness and as soon as he was old enough ran away to sea. In 1725 he led the mutiny on board the ship 'Caroline', personally murdering the captain; so beginning a reign of piracy and terror that made his name famous around Europe. Planning to cross the Atlantic to join the pirates of the Caribbean, he sailed to Orkney for supplies but was recognised, captured and subsequently hanged in London. Gow was the inspiration for Captain Cleveland in Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Pirate' (1822). A scarce and important work on piracy. CBEL II, p.508; NMMC IV, 135.

Per quanto concerne "Pierrette" si tratta d'una delle prime edizioni "pirata" in volume: la prima edizione francese in volume (chez Souverain) è della fine del 1840. Al contrario, "Une ténébreuse affaire" fu pubblicato in volume prima in Belgio, nel 1841, dalla Société belge de Librairie (l'edizione che noi presentiamo), da Haumann, da Meline e da A. Jamar, tutte edizioni che si rifacevano alle puntate apparse in Francia nel giornale "Le Journal du Commerce" (1841). Solo l'anno successivo - il 1842 - vedrà la pubblicazione dell'opera in volume in Francia, presso l'editore Souverain. Ottimo esemplare. Ex-libris Caproni.

Fioriture e radi strappetti marginali, ma ottime condizioni. Lo stampatore svizzero Johann Jacob Thurneysen (1754-1803) fu attivo a Basilea dal 1779 (prima con Wilhelm Haas, poi con Abel Merian e fino al 1791 con J. Lukas Legrand), Stampò testi legati all'Illuminismo quali l'opera di Voltaire e di Federico II di Prussia, fece anche edizioni “pirata” di autori inglesi quali Addison, Smith, Hume. Eludendo la rigida regolamentazione inglese sul copyright, queste venivano pubblicate a minor costo in continente ed importate in Inghilterra, facendo concorrenza agli stampatori locali.

In-12° (160x90mm), pp. (24), 450, pergamena floscia coeva con nervi passanti al dorso e titolo manoscritto al dorso. Alcune carte lievemente brunite ma più che buon esemplare Anche se presentata come traduzione italiana del Nouveau Cuisinier François, grande classico della gastronomia francese, composto dall'Ecuyer de Cuisine del Marchese di Uxelles, in realtà come spiega Claudio Benporat in Storia della gastronomia italiana, pp. 184-89, il libro italiano non ha una parentela diretta con il testo di La Varenne, ma è la traduzione di tre di quei numerosi testi anonimi che circolavano a quel tempo in Francia e che si fregiavano della paternità di La Varenne, senza averne alcun diritto, a soli scopi commerciali. Nonostante la palese pirateria, l'opera ebbe un grande successo in Italia e fu rieditata fino all'inizio del XIX secolo. In ogni caso è da notare come i tre trattati anonimi sulla base di un analisi comparativa siano ispirati direttamente al Varenne i cui testi sono ampiamente cannibalizzati e dunque l'impatto sull'ambiente culinario italiano, considerando che molti usarono anche l'edizione francese, non si discosta poi tanto dal caso in cui la traduzione fosse condotta sui testi originali. L'opera originale riguarda ogni possibile piatto della cucina francese, con speciale attenzione alla pasticceria e alle confetture, e conobbe, tra Seicento e Settecento, notevole fortuna editoriale con numerose ristampe, circa una trentina; e concorse in modo fondamentale a fissare la cucina francese a cavallo tra XVII e XVIII secolo, con una codificazione gastronomica destinata a lasciare una traccia profonda sui grandi cuochi di Francia, in aperta rottura con le tradizioni culinarie rinascimentali italiane (malgrado indiscutibili apporto di gastronomi italiani come Bartolomeo Scappi). Nato intorno al 1615, Varenne era un sostenitore dei cibi leggeri - raccomandava l'uso di verdure fresche a "chilometri zero" - e nelle sue ricette, famose le salse, si riproponeva di conservare il sapore originario degli alimenti, rifiutandosi di seppellirlo sotto quintali di spezie esotiche. Morì nel 1678, ridotto in miseria e amareggiato dalle critiche degli altri famosi chef, che non vollero capire l’importanza storica della sua pubblicazione. Cfr. Vicaire, p. 501. Piatti foderati da bella carta marmorizzata. Rarissima edizione pirata, una delle più rare in assoluto, di una delle opere più celebri del grande autore libertino francese, André-Robert Andréa de Nerciat, nato il 17 aprile 1739 a Digione e morto nel gennaio 1800 a Napoli. Grande sostenitore della libertà dei costumi che propugnò in diverse sue opere anonime, è conosciuto per le sue opere libertine, allegre, fantasiose e traboccanti di vigorosa vitalità che furono molto apprezzate anche da De Sade che, curiosamente, possedeva questa rara edizione della Felicia di Nerciat. Fra le sue opere più celebri Félicia o Mes Fredaines (1775), Doctorat improvvisato (1788), Mon novitiat o Les Joies de Lolotte (1792), Monrose o Le Libertin par fatalité (1792), gli Afroditi (1793) e postumo Le Diable au corps (1803). Lacunose sono le origini di Nerciat, alcune degli studi lo individuano come un cavaliere di origine aristocratica napoletana altre come semplicemente, proveniente da una famiglia di Bresse di umili origini. L'origine italiana, ovviamente, più prestigiosa, è stata spesso messa in discussione a favore di una nascita più umile. Il dibattito durò fino al 1930, quando il barone Robert de Nerciat tentò di dimostrare, in una lettera scritta, l'origine aristocratica della famiglia Nerciat. Sicuramente ebbe una solida educazione, facilmente, riscontrabile dall'utilizzo e citazione dei classici latini che a più riprese, ritornano nelle sue opere. Si sa che fu ricevuto come gendarme della Guardia Ordinaria del Re e che frequentò i salotti del Marchese de La Roche con il quale, una volta che questi cambiò il nome in Luchet, cavaliere di Saint-Louis, brillò alla corte di Federico II. Durante questo periodo frequentò importanti circoli libertini che gli fornirono informazioni che poi riprodusse nei suoi romanzi. L'uscita della sua prima opera Felica nel 1775 gli diede enorme successo ma la sua capacità di spendere sempre di più di quanto guadagnato, lo portarono ai tavoli da gioco e a fare spesso il doppiogiochisti, per diversi personaggi. Ricoprì anche diverse cariche pubbliche. Nell'anno di quest'edizione pirata del volume, divenne aiutante di campo del duca di Brunswick al quale avrebbe venduto i suoi servizi come agente segreto, anche se, acnhe nel periodo rivoluzionario, le avventure che caratterizzarono la sua vita sono tutt'altro che sicure e chiare e sempre coperte da un'aura di mistero ed incertezza. L'edizione qui citata è sfuggita alla maggior parte dei bibliografi di Nerciat. Nell'avviso all'opera, l'editore dichiara di aver deciso di ripubblicare il lavoro dopo aver esaminato il manoscritto originale di Félicia che secondo lui è stato poi “sfigurato da editori fraudolenti" nelle edizioni a stampa. Quello che è certo è che le note a piè di pagina di questa edizione, stampate a pié di pagina, sembrano inedite. Forse è anche per questo che De Sade abbia scelto proprio questa edizione per inserirla fra i suoi libri come attesta un celebre esemplare che porta la sua firma e che venne venduto qualche anno addietro in un'asta pubblica. Come scrive Valérie van Crugten-André de “Sade e Nerciat sono probabilmente gli unici autori ad aver sviluppato un'erotologia, lo scopo di che è la ricerca assoluta del piacere (...) entrambi i romanzieri (…) hanno portato il romanzo libertino al limite di ciò che si può dire”. Edizione rarissima che a parte i difetti al dorso, si presenta, all'interno, in ottime condizioni di conservazione.
